A fun time last Saturday

Last Saturday, we went to an Aussie Rules football match with friends. They are members of the ‘Eagles’ and we were playing the Sydney Swans. Vince and I were treated to free food and wine in a special area. We could choose to stay inside or to sit in the open area you see in the photo.
Before the match, a wedgetail eagle is let loose to fly around the oval several times before returning to its handler.
We were lucky that the weather was kind to us although we could have stayed inside the whole time if it had been raining. A couple of bigwigs and former players talked to us before the match and at half-time.
Our team didn’t win but we enjoyed the time spent there.

Sounds like a very good experience. Well, sportsman spirit is not confined to winning and loosing. You enjoyed the game and that's all that matters.
. Glad that the weather didn't ruin the fun.
Are people in stadium comfortable with the eagle flying around? I am sure that a few of them might be scared.

The worst part of any game is when bigwigs feel the need to make speeches before, during and after games.

@JudyEv Wow! I've never known anyone with a captive audience to only speak for a short time!

If they go on for too long, those at the back of the room start chatting among themselves!
and those in the front try to drift away without being noticed.

It was very enjoyable. The atmosphere in those big arenas is quite exciting.

I almost always enjoy going to sporting events, but haven't been to one in quite sometimes. It is always hot when I want to go or too expensive

Even 'normal' tickets to these games are expensive and we're not interested enough to spend the money. It was good of our friends to invite and I could see why they get so engrossed in their team.

I LOVE Aussie Rules Football. When ESPN started in America it didn’t have much to show, so they’d show things like Aussie Rules Football. And I got addicted to it. Now you can’t find it in America.
(But they do show soccer out the wazoo.

I find it very physical. VERY physical which turns me off a bit. Concussion and ongoing problems were becoming a real issue and now there are compulsory lay-off periods if a player is concussed at all. At least that's something.

I think some don't watch the football much at all but just sit, eat and drink with their friends in the various rooms.

They have had a lot of injuries and also have a lot of young players. I think it will be a few years before they hit the top again.
