Oh boy. I don't know what I was thinking agreeing to be the advisor for the club at work. Yes I like to bake but here on my terms with my timing. At school in a 40 minute time period? Yikes. I didn't even post on the Baking Club Google Classroom until like 2 days ago because I didn't want to scare everyone away. I am notorious at work because the subject I teach is challenging, I won't put up with behavior BS, and who knows why else. It is funny because my students all come in being petrified of me but by Christmas they are like "Ms. NJChicaa you are pretty cool. Bio sucks but you are cool." Anyway I finally created my own Classroom and put the code on the club's page for students to join. 21 students have already joined. That's not bad for just 2 days in the summer. I'm actually kind of afraid that some of my former students from last year will join when they hear I'm the new advisor. The former advisor did mostly just decorating contests which is all well and good but not my jam. I don't have the creativity or patience for that kind of stuff. The assistant principal told me I can make the club whatever I want so I want to focus on actually making stuff. I've put a lot of thought into what we can do in the life skills room with limited equipment/budget/time. So far I have on the list: -pound cake -cookies -royal icing -muffins -marshmallows -ice cream sauces (hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow) -dessert dips (funfetti, cannoli, fluff/cream cheese) -lollipops It will be a project to make sure we have whatever equipment/bakeware we need. I have 2 KitchenAid stand mixers but the rest of it is touch and go. Still it will be worth it if the kids have fun and learn something. I wish I could teach it as a class every day. They would be making bread, layer cakes, etc. For now though we will start small and see how it goes. I also want to see if they are interested in cooking stuff. Again the time is limited but I could teach them how to do various dips, salad dressings, hummus, red sauce, etc. Maybe I should just stick to decorating cupcakes.

It’s going to be so great. It would have been so fun if I could have taken something like that in school. I can’t wait to hear about how it goes.

I guess if you poll the kids in the beginning you could find out what they are most interested in. I imagine some are very artistic.

The art of cleanup after baking is a good skill, too. I hope you and your kids have fun.

You can also give them cooking and baking tips. I had a Home Ec class in junior high; but I learned most of what I know on my own. Some tips would have been welcome.

I'm sure, once you get going, everything will be fine. I'm looking forward to hearing about the various projects and how the students do.

That sounds fun! It's something needed too. If you can make it fun I think they'll flock to it. If decorating is a big thing, maybe you could stick with simple designs...I'm not a big decorator lol I just like making stuff.
