The cows of West Cork

West Cork is a new part of Ireland for me and I’m loving it. Small, well-kept towns along the coast, well beyond the influence of Dublin and its grasping ways. A much milder climate than what I’m accustomed to up on the north-east coast. Restaurants that are unpretentious - except the bland chains that have no place anywhere..
And things are slow. Slow cooked food for example. This morning when we set out for town a cow wandered out onto the road and I stopped to let it cross the road into another field - big beast she was. She mooed me a thank you, and as I started to move on another cow sauntered out. In all about 100 head of lowing cattle ambled from one field onto the country lane in single file, then into another field with no human supervision, udders swaying wildly beneath them, and it took them ages.

That just adds to the quaintness of the area.

I remember some drives into farming country when we'd have to set and wait for a herd of cows, or even sheep sometimes, and then off we would go again. They are dumb and just look at you with their big brown eyes.

We saw that in Austria. You didn't tell me the colour of the cows!! I like to know these things.
