This afternoon I was positioned more southerly than anyone else in Ireland, or so they say. We drove down to Mizen Head in County Cork and it is truly a spectacular part of the country. The air was warm and the sea placid, and the only rumpus was that kicked up by the merry din of cash registers in the Visitor Centre where any amount of over-priced nonsense was available.
We also visited Skibereen where my grandfather used to live and had a look at the heritage centre that records the woes of the Irish Famine which hit Skibereen so devastatingly in the 1840s.
Lough Hyne was another port of call, Europe’s first Marine Nature Reserve. Although inland, and formerly a fresh water lake, it’s a salt water lake now, fed by the Atlantic, a bit of a curiosity, but possessed of a wild beauty like most of the area.

We've been to Mizen Head and it is indeed a beautiful spot. Back in Connemara or near there I think we drove along the 'famine walk' I think it's called. What a dreadful time for the Irish. No wonder they have little love for the British even after all this time.

I like the color of the sea in this picture. This seems that the water is very clean.
