Last Hooray For Disco

While the disco craze was in full swing in the late 1970s, a Grammy Award was available for Best Disco Recording. Like with all things, times change, and now disco is a thing of the past, but there is still plenty of disco music you can listen to and enjoy. Perhaps one day people will want to disco again, just like those who still enjoy doing the twist, and people are still dancing to waltzes and tangos.
Unfortunately the award came at a time when disco was on the way out the door. So the first and also the last time the Grammy was presented for Best Disco Recording, it went to Gloria Gaynor for “I Will Survive” on February 27, 1980. This song is a personal favorite of mine, and I remember moments on a crowded disco floor, this song blasting, and me just hoping I would survive till the end of the song.
At the Grammy’s the night that Gaynor won, the others who were also nominated were Earth, Wind & Fire “Boogie Wonderland”, Michael Jackson “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”, Donna Summer “Bad Girls” and Rod Stewart “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”.
With all the other great competition, this song was really the last hooray for disco.
Do you think they made the right decision, or would you have given the Grammy award to one of the other nominees? Do you still listen to disco music?

I loved the music of the 70's, I rather listen to it
than what they play as music these days.

@2ndchance24 my favorites come from the 50s, 60s, 70, 80, 90, and they lost me to music in the 2000s,

I had a lot of fun during the disco craze and many good memories. I would listen to disco now, yes. "I Will Survive" was a great tune. I don't know.

I can't say that I listen to disco, but I remember "I Will Survive." It was one of my Mom's favorite songs.

@RasmaSandra I was born in 1970, so it probably didn't have a huge influence on me growing up. Plus I listened to all of my parent's 50's and 60's records growing up.

@JudyEv in the discos they played the long versions of songs, and when you had had some cocktails and already had quite a lot of fun it was a challenge to dance the song to the end.

Boogie Wonderland is one of my favorites. I still enjoy disco music. I'd like to open up a disco club and see how many of the people my age would show up!

I loved all that disco music and I Will Survive one of my favorite songs. I actually have it on my playlist. Brings back some great memories of my dancing days and all the fun that came with it.
I'm happy the Grammy went to Gloria Gaynor.

Discos are still very popular here in the UK and 80’s themed ones are big business.
I used to go regularly to several discos ….i love the music and I love dancing.
