Scrambled Eggs for Cheaps Again

It seems almost weird to me to say a scrambled egg dinner is cheap, considering what eggs were not that long ago. They're still not cheap compared to what they were a couple years ago. But okay, they're back to some sense of at least "economical." But that's what's for dinner tonight. A batch of scrambled eggs. In traditional @thislittlepennyearns style, I thought I would do a little break down. I am curious anyway. So, here it is. 8 eggs $1.33. 3 hot dogs, sliced $0.62 Half an onion, $.050. A splash of milk, $0.15. A spat of butter, $0.25. 4 ounces of shredded cheese $1.00. 4 slices of toast with butter, $0.50. The grand total for our meal? $4.35. I don't know about you, but that's a pretty cheap meal, and we'll be quite full when all is said and done. We'll probably serve the eggs with a little dab of ketchup on them which will raise the cost a little bit, but not by anything to write home about. Do you like scrambled eggs for dinner sometimes? What went on your dinner table tonight? And what are your thoughts on ketchup on your eggs?

Since you asked, ketchup doesn't belong on eggs... I do love scrambled eggs but I usually add chopped ham instead of hotdogs to mine. I do love onions and like to leave them only partly cooked. (I like the crunch and taste of partly raw onion.) Cheddar cheese is always good with scrambled eggs, too. We usually have shredded Colby-Jack in the fridge. Pretty is on a kick of chicken, mashed potatoes and biscuits lately. It's good. And I knew what she was going to make when she offered to make dinner tonight. At least I didn't have to cook tonight.

@porwest I like ketchup and cooked tomatoes but I never add them to eggs. Brats in eggs are good, Italian sausage is always good, no matter what you put it in. Pork sausage is good, bacon works well with eggs, too. I have tried crumbled hamburger in eggs but wasn't very keen on that.

@DaddyEvil Yeah. I'd have to agree on the crumbled hamburger in eggs. Maybe not on that one for me either.

Fine. Have it your way. But I love a little red tanginess on mine. And even sometimes salsa. In fact, you'd think this would be more popular. When McDonald's served breakfast burritos, they'd always offer salsa packets. Tomatoes sometimes even go in an omelet, so to me, it's a bit of a weird controversy. lol But when it comes to meat in a scrambled egg batch, I change it up a lot. I've used cut up brats or Italian sausages, crumbled pork sausage, bacon, ham, hot dogs... It just depends on what I feel like and what's on hand.

I do like a scrambled egg …..The Mister does a mighty fine scrambled eggs with toast. ( I have to have my things by the side of the toast as I don’t like things on the toast as they make it go soggy …..I hate soggy toast ! ). We have it for breakfast sometimes. We wouldn’t have it for a tea. I wouldn’t have ketchup ….but that’s just me….. * if you bought a block of cheese and grated it yourself it would be even cheaper …..just saying ….

I get my cheese pretty cheap, at around $3.79 for a 1-pound bag. I would say freshly grated is better too. But I got lazy despite my cheapness, and just keep a couple bags of shredded in the house.

@porwest they add a powder to grated cheese to keep it from going off.

I never serve eggs for dinner, but I like scrambled eggs for lunch. I usually add chopped ham and shredded provolone cheese and chopped onion. I also like a Spanish omelette for a change, eggs, potatoes and onions.

@porwest - I think it's just a matter of habit not to have eggs in the evening for supper. We never have eggs for breakfast, but I often make eggs for lunch.

We don't eat breakfast at breakfast time, so it is either had for a lunch or a dinner for us. It makes for a cheap dinner meal so long as the eggs are beefed up to make it a heartier dish. But I love eggs any time of the day, really.

I am with you. It's just good eats that has no rule, in my book, about when you can eat it.

When it comes to adding a meat, it's usually sausage, hot dogs, ham or bacon, depending on what we feel like and what's available. Usually I'd add in some bell peppers too, but we're out and I don't want to buy any more before we leave for our camping trip on Thursday. But yes, it does make for a delicious dinner.

I do miss eggs. At the risk of being gross, they go right through me in about 5 minutes with diarrhea. I think it's an egg intolerance as opposed to an egg allergy, but nonetheless I can't eat eggs. Which makes me wonder about the flu shot. They ask you about allergies to eggs, don't they? I don't know what to say.

Some foods affect some people differently than others, for sure. My wife gets "activated" by eggs, but never diarrhea. Corn does that to her too. She still eats both, though. lol

Yes, I eat those any time of the day! Pretty much the same way you make yours—sometimes I use ham if we don’t have hotdogs, just whatever’s available. I might add tomatoes or other veggies too, depending on what’s in the fridge. And we usually have it with ketchup, mayo, or even a mix of both!
