We've Spent a Lot of Money on the Mother-in-Law This Week

We can help her here and there but we need to re-adjust our budget if this is going to be an ongoing thing.
We bought her medicines after the E.R. Visit. We bought her medicines against yesterday after the gerontology visit. Those two totaled $100. I paid her co-pay visit to see the doctor and we bought her groceries twice. That totaled $200.
So we've spent $300 on mother-in-law just in the last week. And of course there's more coming down the line. We'll do what we can but we have to keep HER on a budget too and no more spending $1,000/month on clothes, shoes and purses. She can afford her own expenses and bills.

Does she charge things or pay cash? Her credit card could be taken from her. If she can't drive, maybe she will spend less unless she does her shopping online. We spent a lot of my in-laws too. It's unavoidable.

If she has a debit card, maybe she could "lose" it.

She's a victim mentality with a sense of entitlement. She thinks we have money coming out of butts because we've made good financial decisions and saved instead of spending throughout the years. She's not comprehending anything now and we're able to do it so we are to a point. But we're not going to sacrifice our savings so that she can shop.

She needs someone to have a financial power of attorney, and it needs to not be son #2.

If your husband were her power of attorney, he could look after all of her expenses with her own account, and he could put her on a budget. If she isn't driving, she shouldn't be going out shopping, unless she shops online for clothing, shoes and purses.

Good luck! It's never fun trying to get somebody used to wasting money to slow down or stop.

It may be her right on her son
even she can afford her expenses...she also should understand how you feel if it crosses your budget

Yes, my husband's mother is 82 years old and apparently has dementia.

@looeyville talking money with confused people is a nightmare. Either they’ll spend nothing or they’ll spend everything.

Yes, you have to be careful and make sure her funds are being used for her stuff. Maybe selling a few of those pink jumpers would help raise funds. Of course it is normal to help out , but there has to be a limit.
