Canola crops can be seen from space

In our travels over the last three or four days, we saw extensive paddocks of canola. Canola was first introduced into Australia from Canada in the 1960s. It was first called rapeseed but Mr Wiki tells me that canola is “a group of rapeseed cultivars that were bred to have very low levels of erucic acid and which are especially prized for use as human and animal food.” Broadacre farming is the go in some of the country we drove through and fences are poor or non-existent. However, the bright yellow canola crops stretch far and wide. The colour is truly golden when the sun is shining on the crops. A news report today says that the yellow crops can be seen in satellite photos. My photo is from a previous trip. It’s better than the one I took a few days ago.

Yes. I guess it's exported. I need to learn a bit more about where it goes.

The oil produced by this crop is still called rapeseed oil in Switzerland. I love those yellow fields, this is a great photo.

Thanks. I'm glad you like the photo. I must do some research and find out if we manufacture our own canola oil. I certainly hope we do.

Imagine that indeed! I prefer the name 'canola' to 'rapeseed'.

This is a lovely photo! When I lived in Oregon, I would travel from my tiny town to another close by and drive by a huge field of Canola. I have a photo somewhere of it. Just gorgeous.

I heard canola oil is one of the healthiest cooking oil available. I hope it is rewarding to the farmers too.

It must be rewarding as there must be thousands of acres of it being grown.

Driving by a field of canola is a bright and beautiful experience. Little is known about the origin of the canola oil to many, but you, as I have seen the fields of it. The flowers are so bright that I wonder if they glow in the dark.
