Banks don’t like to count coins

My little ones piggy bank finally filled up. I rolled 50 pennies into a wrapper but there was no other amounts large enough to roll. So I took it to the bank in a ziplock bag. The cashier told me since it was from her piggy bank she would accept it but that they usually don’t. I had no idea and found that odd. She said because they have the coin sorting machine for people to use. That however charges a fee, a percentage of each dollar so I won’t use it. Her total of coins came to $5 so it didn’t take long at all to count. Now I know for next time but I think it’s silly for a bank to do that. Photo is unrelated. I saw this neat bell outside a vets office over the summer.

@AmbiePam I guess so. No more thank you for your business now it’s go take care of this yourself.

Banks HAVE to accept coins. It's legal tender. A teller doesn't like to count coins but it's their job. You could get her in trouble by talking to one of her bosses about that. I'd say that was lousy service and would have taken one of the courtesy cards and filled it out and turned it in to another teller or someone at a desk there in the bank. That's an interesting welcome sign and bell.

@daddyevil if stores legally have to take whatever tender you give them I assumed banks would to. I was pretty surprised by what she told me. It was such a small amount it didn’t take her even a minute to count it all.

@shaggin When I was still at Walmart, they didn't want people bringing bags of change to a register to pay for something. We were supposed to tell them to take their change to a coin counting machine in the store and then bring the receipt the machine gave them back to us and we'd treat the receipt like cash, giving bills/change back like any other transaction. If I'm remembering correctly, at the time, Walmart's change machines didn't charge a fee if you used them like that.

@DaddyEvil I like the option of getting cash back when checking out at registers. It doesn’t charge a fee that way and I don’t have to go to the atm or do a bank withdrawal at a branch.

I like the coin sort machines. Usually the ones in banks don't charge much to convert coins. It sure is a lot more efficient than rolling them, and cleaner too. FYI, as long they have the coinstar available they aren't obligated to count coins..but nice she did it for little one.

@snowy22315 yes now I know. I actually like to count and roll coins. I always did it with my grandfather so it’s kind of a nostalgic thing for me.

That's not a friendly bank. The teller couldn't see that a child had amassed the coins? That used to be a fun time for everybody, finding out how much loot you'd added up.

@sallypup I roll the money when I can but it didn’t add up to enough to be able to put them in rolls. The total she had to count wound up being $4.50 since I had already rolled the 50cents. I did tell her it was my little ones piggy bank money. My little one stood there grinning ear to ear after handing it to the teller so I can’t imagine how upset she would have been if we had been turned away. Thankfully we weren’t. Now I know for next time at least.

@shaggin That teller should have had the heart to play along with your little one.

That's a nice photo. We used a coin counter once that was free but there was a paper-clip in amongst the coins and it jammed up their machine.

@Judyev oh no that would be embarrassing to have that happen.

I have tons of coins. I won't use a machine that charges either. This should be interesting.

@Lindaohio I can’t imagine any being free anymore. I prefer to roll them myself it’s more fun. It brings back nice memories for me.
