I Got an Awesome Deal on Coffee

Like everything else that goes in my cupboards and cabinets, or anywhere else for that matter, I am a stickler for getting the best deal possible. So, now that Great Value coffee in the large can, which is 40.3 ounces, has jumped to almost $18 a can, it's no longer a good deal. That's 44 cents an ounce, by the way.
Martinson coffee, which I get at Ollie's when they have it, usually runs about 28 cents an ounce, but when I went yesterday to grab some, they were out of it.
That happens. It's a buyout store, and so, items change regularly.
But what they did have were Maxwell House Special Delivery "restaurant packs," which contain 7 1.7 ounce pouches of "single pot" filter packs. Each bag was 9.8 ounces and were priced at $1.99 each.
That comes to 20 cents an ounce. I couldn't pass it up. The thing is, I never use 1.7 ounces of grounds when I make a pot. In fact, I only put in 5 tablespoons of grounds per pot.
So, I took out the filter packs, cut them open, and poured the coffee grounds into my can, and thus, I can use it however I want but still got a great deal on coffee.
I bought 4 9.8 ounce packages, and may go back and get some more. It's the cheapest I have seen any coffee for a while. Incidentally, that same can of Great Value coffee, just a couple of months ago, was $13 a can.
Talk about a new definition to the term, "spiked coffee."

For as much coffee as I drink, you'd think I'd pay closer attention to price, but I don't ever really notice very much, although I do know the price has slowly been rising. But a buddy of mine the other day pointed out just how much the price of coffee was going up, and it kind of blew my mind. Not going to change my drinking habits by any means, but I may just pay a little closer to cost next time I stop by the store to get some coffee.

@porwest I’m like you, I’m not locked into any particular brand of coffee. I usually get whatever is on sale.

I guess part of what "saves" me is that I don't really have any particular brand preference when it comes to coffee. Coffee is coffee is coffee. lol. So, be it Beaumont from Aldi, or Chase & Sanborn I sometimes get from Menards, Great Value from Walmart...
It's all the same to me, so what goes into my cart anytime and always is whatever I can get for the cheapest.
The price won't change my drinking of coffee either, it's just one of those things. But the higher prices are definitely making me look a bit deeper for better prices where I can get them.
Incidentally I went back and got another 5 packs, so that makes 9 total and I paid about $17.91 for 88.2 ounces of coffee. I think that's a steal, even by yesterday's prices.

@moffittjc With the 9 packs so far I bought I should have plenty of time to find another deal...and it is possible I might make one more Ollie's run to see if I can grab a few more. I find coffee really doesn't go bad either.

That price does not seem awful. Based on the deal I got, 35 ounces would cost me $7. I will definitely be grabbing up more. And while Maxwell House is not premium coffee by any means, it's still good coffee, and I have never been a coffee snob, so this works for me. I have drunk some pretty cheap coffee and you'd be hard pressed to have me tell you what the difference is.
Coffee tastes amazingly like...coffee. lol
I WILL say one of my favorites is Seattle's Best. But I have not been able to find it for a while. I will grant you some are bolder than others. But really, it's more about the roast than it is about the bean. At least in my experience.
And a LOT of it is basically perspective. If you THINK it's better, it tastes better. But it doesn't necessarily mean it IS better. You've just CONVINCED yourself it is. That's the case with a LOT of things, actually.
Ultimately, we are marketed TO, and at the same time, we market to OURSELVES. lol

I don't drink coffee, but my mother does. She had gotten a Keurig a few years ago. She had said that prices are crazy now on coffee.

@LindaOHio Yep. This brings my total to 9 packs at $1.99 each, so I paid $17.91 for 88.2 ounces of coffee. I will eyeball the windows for any police cars pulling into my driveway.

Ollie's is a very fun and interesting store, and I have found many great deals there. You still have to shop, like anywhere else. Many items are not cheaper. But when you find a bargain, you know it, and yes...
You pounce. I will likely be going back for more in the very near future.

You got your coffee deal, I got my matcha powder yesterday, and I love having it. For only $2, I can make 1O cups of iced matcha latte. When you buy it in a coffee shop, it will cost you $5 dollars and more for a venti size. I am so happy right now.

I have stopped drinking coffee. My late hubby enjoyed coffee in every interesting way that when he passed I could no longer even think of coffee, I always have a fresh brewed jug of iced tea in my fridge,
