The ferry we took yesterday was a far cry from the ferries on the same route in the 70s - no surprises there.
The parliament that meets in my head had unanimously agreed that we would leave the house at 7am, but the monarch overruled parliament and by 7.15 enough steam was issuing forth from my ears as I waited at the front door to propel the ferry across the north channel to Scotland. Someone couldn’t decide which of the many pairs of shoes that were accompanying us the queen ought to wear. You know what it’s like.
We left at 7.15 and at 7.35 not only had we embarked, but we were out of the car and seated in the cosiest little lounge (for which I paid too much). However the quietness and comfort of the lounge was worth it, and gave us access to unlimited tea and coffee, soft drinks and wine which in turn lead to too many comfort breaks when we disembarked. Also unlimited were crisps (chips) and pastries. Wine at 7.35 I thought was a bad idea and I abstained.
It was all very civilised - there was even a restaurant reserved for truck drivers!! Used to be that truck drivers filled the only “lounge” with cigarette smoke, loud talking and guffawing.
We slipped into harbour at 10am as planned, under a baby blue sky.

Even with the false start, it sounds like a good crossing. Safe travels and have a marvelous time.
