My Grandpuppy is Aging

Ellie, short for Eleanor, is our grandpuppy. She just turned 13 years old. Our son and his now wife choose her when she was a pup, and they adopted her at 3 months of age. Ellie is an Aussie-Doodle. She has alot of the Australian shepherd in her and is often skirting the edge of the crowd wherever we are in their home. The past 10 months have seen Ellie go from a mature dog to an aged dog. Her health is beginning to fade. She will be allowed to live out her days, unless she seems in distress. This photo shows her as she was 8 years ago. You can really see the brightness in her coat and her eyes, and her posture is better. The lower picture, I took this afternoon, she was 'resting' which is what Ellie spends the majority of her time doing. But.......I suppose that she has earned that right. ~Photo is mine

Ellie is still beautiful, but she is showing her age now. I hope she is safe and she can rest as much as she likes.

The girls do not let her get up on the couch, but when we walked to the park yesterday afternoon, she got up there to take a little nap. I found her resting so comfortably when we came back home again. She was having a good day.

@LadyDuck Besides this little interaction with me, she mostly keeps to herself and sleeps.

Poor Ellis. She certainly has aged a lot. She has had such a good life.

She has had a good life, even if she took a number of months to accept that the babies were not going anywhere. She has an issue with one of her organs, I cannot remember which one, but she has her good and bad days. Yesterday was a good day. The girls do not let her get up on the couch, but while we were gone to play at the park she crawled up there and slept nicely.

@JudyEv Oh yes, she has been with the girls until very recently when our son and DIL made the difficult decision to move her out to her mother's place. She lives in a remote village, and since she lives alone, it is a much quieter household and better for Ellie, and the girls are not seeing her physical decline.

@Juliaacv She was on her own without the babies for a few years I think, wasn't she? How cute that she got herself up on the couch.

@Juliaacv I think good memories are the only thing that we can ever give to them.

I know, seeing her, with so much grey hair, and so skinny, it makes me sad also.

@Juliaacv Dogs are so wonderful; but they just don't live long enough.

Poor baby.. happens to all of us I'm afraid. You hadn't mentioned Elle in so long I wasn't sure she was still living.

I know, she is aging, and she has tummy troubles. I don't know how long we will have her around for. The cold season is coming, and she used to love the coldness and the snow, but the past few years it hasn't been her friend, she is so skinny now.

What a beautiful dog. She has had a good home which will help with her getting older.

Thank you. She was an adorable pup, a lovely adult dog, full of vim and vigor and now in her senior years, she is still very loyal to her family and loves to cuddle a pillow if a person isn't nearby to cuddle with. We were fortunate to have found such a sweetie.

She sure is grey isn't she? Our son would have her put down if she were in pain all of the time.

They seem to stay in the puppy stage for a long time and then pass from that to a lovely age but it feels short lived sometimes as the geriatric stage begins. Ellie has her good and bad days now.

When pets get old their owners feel worried about them. Hope she doesn't fall sick.

I have never noticed a dog get so much grey hair as Ellie has gotten. She has tummy troubles, so when she has a good day, we are all thankful.
