Some excitement at work today

and not in a good way. It was the start of 8th period (last class) and I had 2 new students walk in. They had dropped from honors bio to the college prep level. I had the boy's older brother a couple of years ago and he was a great kid. He actually told his brother that he hoped that he would get me as a teacher because I was a really good teacher. So I got the 2 of them into Google Classroom and they sat down to start reviewing my notes. The other students were working on assignments and I was just kind of chilling and listening to my Pandora channel. (hey it was the end of the day at the end of the week ) A safety officer walked into my room and silently gestured for me to join him in the hall. He stood on one side of the doorway. Another safety officer was on the other side behind me so he scared the crap out of me. He asked if I had that student in class. I said yes. He said that I needed to get him to see the assistant principal. I asked if he should take his stuff and he said yes. Then, and this surprised me, he said quietly that the security program the district uses detected that at some point today he had googled instructions for how to make a pipe bomb. (they usually don't tell us what is going on) I went into the class and told him to grab his bag and "you have to go". I pointed to the door. I didn't want to say "go with security" or "go to the office" because I didn't want him to freak out and I didn't want the rest of the class to think he was in trouble. I texted my ex that security had just taken a student from my class because he had googled how to make a pipe bomb. His response? "Kids these days. Back in my day we could do that without google." That made me laugh inside. The situation certainly wasn't funny but that reply perfectly represents him and his wicked sense of humor. He's been cracking me up for over 20 years. About 20 minutes later one of the safety officers returned to tell me that he hadn't done it. Apparently his district-issued Chromebook was unattended (bathroom break I'm guessing) and a "friend" did it. Some "friend". I would never speak to that person again.

I hope he doesn't get in trouble and does well with your teaching.

Yeah, back in the day they’d go to the library. And then everyone would wonder why those books were in the library. I’d be afraid to leave my Chromebook unattended if some yahoo could get me in trouble like that.

Honestly I think he meant that he could just figure it out by himself. I believe it. The guy is super-smart.

I'm glad it turned out to be a scare and not the real deal.

I hope they are able to get that "friend" who did it.
