The caramel apple adventure with the baking club was a wild success

I was nervous about it all day. I mean I wouldn't bat an eye at making them here but the idea of directing high school students had me worried about how it was going to go. I had the students RSVP on the Google Classroom so I could make sure I had enough of everything. Well I was expecting 20 students and 27 showed up. There wasn't even enough seating for them all!
It was my first time attempting something like that so it started out a little rough but then we got into a groove. I had plenty of everything except caramel. (who knew 6 bags wasn't going to be enough?
) Well we did have *just* enough but the students at the very end of the line didn't get as much on their apples as the ones at the beginning. I started being a Caramel Nazi and making them hold their apples over the pot for awhile to get as much of it back in for someone else to use. Hey now I know for next year.
The students were disappointed that they weren't able to take their apples with them today but they need to be refrigerated for at least 30 minutes and I knew they wouldn't want to hang around for that. So they will pick them up at the life skills classroom tomorrow before school. I hope most of them show because I don't want to monopolize her refrigerator. I was pleased to see that several students stayed behind to help clean everything up. I had to leave 1 pot soaking in the sink overnight because the boys didn't do such a great job of constantly stirring one of the pots of caramel.
The students were done by 2:30. I didn't get out of there until 3 because I was washing the pots and spoons. The next meeting will be a cupcake or cookie decorating thing which will be faster and less expensive in supplies/ingredients.
It will be interesting to see if as many students show up next time. The principal stopped by before we got going and he was very happy to see how many students were there.
