If you could live anywhere ……where would it be ?

United Kingdom

I have been thinking a lot about retiring . Until recently in this country women retired at 60. Don’t tell anyone but I will be 60 in January ….. “Oh no ! “ I hear you cry “ but you look far too young ! “ Well, thank you, but it is true. However……the Government have slapped another 7 years on my working life !!! Yes, thanks for that ! As I have been off work for a while now with my dodgy arm, it has made me think about retirement. I have two places that I would like to retire to …..not countries particularly….. One would be the seaside…..to be able to walk along the beach, no matter what time of the year ….. The second would be in a little village , where everyone knows everyone, they have village fetes, cake bakes, everyone meets in the local pub ….a real community family. Obviously you can tell I am a girl with simple tastes …. Maybe I should have said I would live my life taking cruise after cruise …..holidays where I could walk on a white sand beach and drink cocktails all day and dance in a local bar all night ….. Actually Now I’ve said that….it sounds rather appealing ! Time for a rethink ! What are your thoughts ?

I’m on disability, so I am permanently retired to a low income housing apartment in a bad neighborhood, but a nice town. I used to dream of living in a nice place, but hey, at least I can visit my dad! He’s retiring soon (he’s 70), and he might move to the small town most of his brothers and sisters have moved to these days. It’s a charming place to live.

@Traceyjayne It would take a lot of work and headaches, but I sure would try. It’s a nice town, but surely they have low income apartments too.

Yeah, it’s a blow to women of a certain age to have to wait another 5, 6, or 7 years to get the state pension. I myself had to wait another year (66 instead of 65) and I was miffed about that! If I’d had the choice of anywhere to retire to, it would probably be JLo’s boudoir.

@Traceyjayne I love my answer too. My dream will be greatly enhanced, once the restraining order is lifted, and I can profess my love again.

@traceyjayne I retired to a small coastal town 2 years ago. I’m happy, but wish I’d gone with plan A which was to retire to northern France or Athens.

@Traceyjayne One of the issues is our daughter, the one with Down Syndrome. She loves both France and Greece and she’d have a great time but when we’re no longer able to look after her she’d be on her own and that wouldn’t work. And she’d not be entitled to the same benefits as she is here. Life is complicated.

@xFiacre oh, I see, I didn’t realise your situation. Yes. You do have to think about the future care of your daughter.

Without a doubt I would move to the Florida Keys. Laid back, beautiful but unfortunately has become very expensive to purchase a home there. I like any one of your ideas. I hope you can realize your dreams.

I would go back past generations where they made life every where possible with good human relations and good health. In my opinion ,It is not about the place ,it is all about the changes we made to the environment or the targets we build in our relations which made us to thrive for better place.

First of all, happy early 60th! And wow, another 7 years is quite the "gift" from the government. Your two initial ideas sound absolutely perfect—there's a real, peaceful magic in both a seaside walk and a tight-knit village community. But I have to say, your cruise life fantasy painted such a vivid picture that it's hard not to lean that way! Maybe the best plan is a mix: a cozy home base in a village with regular escapes to those white-sand beaches and cocktail bars. Sounds like the perfect balance.

@Traceyjayne It really does sound like the perfect plan. And happy early milestone! The government does have a unique talent for "helping" us plan our futures, doesn't it? Here's to making those next years exactly what you want them to be.

Actually, it does sound like the perfect balance doesn’t it. Yes, the Government are amazing aren’t they ! I can’t believe I am actually reaching that milestone age soon ….thank you for your good wishes.

It would be nice to live in a place where people are kind enough to care. Though sometimes it feels good also to have peace and quiet life where no one can bother you. Actually I would love to think where can we live peacefully without having arguments with anyone.

Thankfully I have been living in two countries after retirement - Singapore and India. That makes life less monotonous.
