More Bloodwork?

Hey everyone, how are you all doing? I got a call from my doctor's office yesterday evening saying the doctor ordered some blood work. Some of my numbers were off, so he wanted to check some more specific blood tests. My numbers that were off were pointing to iron deficiency like I had expected. So, the doctor ordered iron, iron saturation and TIBC (or total binding iron capacity). I already got the numbers back - TIBC high, and iron + iron saturation low (iron saturation really low). That suggests iron deficiency anemia. I will have to wait till the doctor sees the results to know what he wants to do. I have been taking an iron supplement...but I know it takes time to build up. What do you all think?

I wonder if your body is not absorbing nutrients like it should for some reason. I hope the doctor can find the reason and get you where you need to be.

@MommyOfEli2013 .......I say the same. I eat what I want. I'm 73 and my diet hasn't killed me yet.

@celticeagle Well you probably don't eat as bad as I do though lol. But I get that....why be unhappy and miserable eating things you don't like

Maybe it's because of my picky eating, now I'm paying the price. It won't change me from how I eat though

I think a nutritionist would help you, but you really wouldn’t want help. Most people don’t. A nutritionist could tell you which foods you actually like have iron. That way you wouldn’t need a supplement after awhile.

@MommyOfEli2013 I’m not a big red meat fan either. I know it had iron, but I didn’t want to recommend it since it also carries health risks if it is eaten too much.

@AmbiePam It'd be better for me then what I do eat. and the health risks are probably if someone is eating a SAD diet (standard american diet). Plenty who do carnivore eat more red meat I believe and are fine...

I wouldn't like a nutritionist, they usually try to get you to eat foods that I would not ever eat. I had a nutritionist for a while, but I only kept going because she was actually a family friend. Well I know a general list of foods that have iron. I should eat more red meat, trouble is I am not a big fan lol

He may recommend an infusion until the iron stablizes. However, don't quote me on that.

I have heard of those, just don't know if it is "low enough". my iron itself is just a little under the normal range, but the saturation is what worries me

@MommyOfEli2013 It would concern me, too. If that's the case, then it'll incresse the likelyhood he'll suggest an infusion schedule. If your body isn't absorbing iron well enough, the suplments won't build up enough to be effective.

@kaylachan Yes, that probably will be in my near future....but if it would help me feel better then it'd be worth it. If iron deficiency has been my issue then it's been low for quite a long time because of how bad I've felt

From what I’ve learned about you, it’s probably your diet. You don’t seem to eat a lot of the things that keep you healthy. You can get iron from lots of food. Spinach and lentils come to mind, and meats. I eat cereal that is fortified with lots of essential vitamins, minerals, and iron.

@MommyOfEli2013 “Spinach and lentils gross”? Spinach is a super food and if you don’t like the taste, just whizz it up with some of your favourite fruits and veg into a delicious smoothie. Apart from the green colour, you’ll never know it’s in there! And lentil soup is just heavenly. You heaven’t lived until you’ve had lentil soup. Cereals? Well I like a bowl as a quick breakfast, but if I have more time I cook porridge oats. If I remember, I do overnight oats with seeds and fruit and probiotic yogurt. Very healthy.

I know I am paying the price for not liking most foods...and I know a lot of foods have them....but nothing I would eat really. Spinach and lentils? Gross! lol. Some cereals may be okay but I am not really a cereal person lol.

@Orson_Kart The only fruit I like are apples and I don't think they'd go with spinach, yuck. I tried spinach in a smoothie and I can't get past the smell/taste and texture. Believe me, I know it is in there. and we are entitled to our own opinions lol. We'll have to agree to disagree on the lentils. Cereal is not the best food for a diabetic lol, but again, none of the other foods I eat are. But that's good you enjoy the cereal and oats and all that. I don't like oats either lol, or seeds.... some yogurt is okay, if it is not the kind with fruit LOL!

@MommyOfEli2013 It's too bad you don't like veggies because you can eat a ton of those and not hurt anything.

He hasn't suggested anything, if that's change my diet that won't be happening. Well I may eventually do low carb again but I'm not adding veggies.

Yeah I don't do well with "do what you're told". If they told me to eat vegetables there is no way in heck that would happen
