The Calm Before the Storm

Thursday is the day we take the mother-in-law to get her neuropsych testing to determine for certain whether she has dementia, how far gone it is, and what to do about it. That's not going to be an easy day for her or us either one. There'll be crying and probably a little bit of anger. And we'll have to start arranging things for more intensive medical care, etc. Of course we won't get the results until Oct. 23, but she'll react on Thursday after two hours of mentally exhausting testing. And she'll be vocal about it, "There's nothing wrong with me; you two are just trying to put me into a home." So today and tomorrow are our last calm days for a week until we get the results and then have to deal with them.

It’s always good to have family help the process. Even if family would rather not be involved.

That sounds like a very exhausting day ahead.

Just now
I feel like dementia really magnifies whatever their personality is, so in your case it is going to be a rocky road, and you and hubby already know it. My dad was happy in his dementia. . . sometimes confused, but happy.

I hope your mother in law gets a neurologist like my dad has. He has really been very stable for the past several years, and the decline has been minimal. Yeah, he can't remember anything more than a minute or two, and is confused about basic things like how far away I live etc. How old my son is...etc. but I am happy more than 5 years after his diagnosis I can still converse with him.

Hopefully you get all the answers you need to make the best decisions for her. I am glad that's the one thing we have not experienced with mom, being combative. There are other issues. But that wasn't one of them. Yet.
