Is this the entrance or maybe not?

Near Westonia is an open-pit gold mine which is now in mothballs for about the third time in its life. The public can walk up to a viewing station which is what we did. The Edna May Gold Mine was named after the sister of the prospector who discovered gold there in 1911. The entry sign threw us a bit as we approached. The arrows point at each other and seem to end at a point where both gates are closed. We thought maybe it was closed to the public for some reason. However the entry is at right angles to the gates you can see here so once you get there you just step around the right-hand post and go through a smaller personnel gate.

You could see down into the extensive open-cut area. I'll write more about it and add a photo.

It's not as big as the open-cut at Kalgoorlie. We need to get back to that one day.

@Ronrybs With modern mining sites, the companies a re obliged to return the land to its natural state - more or less. So they stockpile the topsoil, mine for all they're worth then, when they've finished with that site, they replace the topsoil and plant native vegetation again. Often too, they build a huge bank so the scar isn't necessarily visible from any major road.

@JudyEv The main problem with open cast mining is the scar on the landscape, but I guess all human activity leaves some trace

For sure this may look confusing at first, but I can see how the entrance is designed.

There is always an explanation for these things - or almost always.

I guess they REALLY want to make sure you know it's that skinny door in the middle. lol. Although is it? It seems blocked by a bush.

@JudyEv Ah. Excellent. Then the signs were correct. lol They should have put a sign right on the access gate saying, "No really...right here."

I think one sign suffices.I doubt if the two signs are for people that come from diffenent direction.

That's very true. I don't really understand why there are two signs.

It's just the way that the entrance is placed that makes it seem as if you've got it wrong somehow.

@judyev sign makers rarely have their target audience in mind. Visitors to Ireland will know this.

That would be confusing. We have also come across such confusing signs and arrows. Maybe they want to give some brain teasers to people
