Two eye tests for Mom…..not such great news ….Cataracts !

So firstly Mom had to have a regular eye test and following that a contact lens test. I was waiting outside the room and after a few minutes I was called in. Mom looked terribly upset , so obviously something was wrong. The cataracts in her one eye have got worse….they are talking about the operation , which won’t be until after Christmas now but they have left it up to Mom as to whether she has it done or not. She has some time to think about it. At 87 she is not keen on the operation but obviously she doesn’t want to lose her sight. It will also affect her driving. Have any of my lovely MyLotters had the operation ? Can you pass on any information …..? Thoughts ?

I’m sorry she has those, but the surgery is simple (as simple as eye surgery can be). When my uncle of blessed memory had the surgery in the 70s he had to be admitted to the hospital and spend a night. My mom’s cataract surgery in the 90s was done in a doctor’s office, and we went to McDonald’s for lunch immediately afterwards. There’s always a risk, but we are truly blessed with the advances made in cataract surgery.

@Traceyjayne I don't know what I would do if I had to make that decision.

My husband is 79 and had both of his eyes done this spring. He is pleased with the outcome and it went very well. It just sounds scary, of course.

My stepmom and late grandmother had it, and they were glad they did.

My father's friend has had cataract surgery, and he said that one by one the membrane that was blocking his vision would be removed from each eye. My uncle also had cataract surgery, and they were all successful.

From talking to people who have had the operation, it's quite simple nowadays but I can understand your mother being a bit worried about it.

Not personally but I know people who have, it is done so simply nowadays and the result is like a miracle. I hope that when she decides it is time to do something that it will all go smoothly.

They told her it takes about 20 minutes.
