My neighbor met me outside when I drove home today and asked me to come to her house because she wanted to tell me something.
She's probably in her mid 80's, a widow, who has been battling cancer and pain.
She told me the most awful story that you makes you wonder how anybody could be so stupid to do a thing like that.
She got a call from a man who called her 4 or 5 times a day telling her he was some kind of law enforcement and that her identity had been hacked and used at several banks. Somehow or another he convinced her to withdraw over $100,000 from her bank, buy a cash box, put the cash in the cash box, wrap it in old clothes, and send it to him via UPS. She did it!!!! Then when that worked, he called her some more telling her to sell her stock and send him the money, but when she went to her stockbroker her realized something was fishy and stopped her from doing it.
She finally told her adult children and they've contacted the FBI, an attorney, the bank, etc.
She feels really stupid.
Can you even imagine?

That’s dreadful.
Did she not think to mention this to any of her grown up children …..surely wrapping it in clothes was the biggest giveaway !
I’m so sorry she lost the money , I’m hoping she gets it back but I doubt it.

There is a definite correlation between the elderly, cognitive decline, and this sort of thing happening. That's why adult children need to be more "in tune" with the financial goings on of their elder parents and relatives, so they can be the line of reason when reason begins to fail us.
I'd like to say I will never get there. But who knows? We all get old, we all experience some level of decline, and who knows where my head will be at when I am 80?
