Lumping barley in the old days

So here’s another scene from the museum in Westonia, Western Australia. This shows a farmer in typical clothing ready to hump a bag of wheat onto a truck.
My father never wore overalls but the truck is typical of one we had. At the back of the tray is a knapsack, a unit which could be used to put out fires, albeit very small ones. Farmers would carry one of these in case a spark from a machine started a fire.
I was impressed that the truck was standing in a crop of barley. Maybe they starched the stalks to make them stand up like they are. (That’s a joke.)
