Lumping barley in the old days

So here’s another scene from the museum in Westonia, Western Australia. This shows a farmer in typical clothing ready to hump a bag of wheat onto a truck. My father never wore overalls but the truck is typical of one we had. At the back of the tray is a knapsack, a unit which could be used to put out fires, albeit very small ones. Farmers would carry one of these in case a spark from a machine started a fire. I was impressed that the truck was standing in a crop of barley. Maybe they starched the stalks to make them stand up like they are. (That’s a joke.)

It all looked very natural and then I thought 'hang on, that barley shouldn't be there'.

@JudyEv It does make it look odd. Plus if he did drive into the field you would see the tire tracks

@wolfgirl569 Maybe he's been there so long, the barley has all stood up again! lol

Gosh, do I have stories I could tell about starch. lol. As for barley? Well, one of my FAVORITE crops next to hops.

Pray tell, dear friend. I'd like to hear some stories about starch.

They fit in quite a few items without making it too crowded.

I love this scene from the Westonia museum and I like also the humor. My grandfather had a similar truck.

It is amazing how good the displays in Australian Museums are. Do they receive a lot of Governmental grants? We do have some good museums here but the good ones are just a few. Culturally, I do not see much discussion of Museums here. By the way, India and Australia are facing each other in an ODI in Perth. Superstar batsman of the Indian cricket : Virat Kohli got out for a duck! Fans are very sad on social media. And well, Mitchell Starc always proves his worth!

I heard about the duck. What a shame for Virat. I've just finished watching a group of people, all of whom are on the autism spectrum, interview Steve Waugh. It was really interesting. Most of the museums here would be manned by volunteers. Sometimes they might get a grant from somewhere.

@JudyEv So the volunteers are doing a great job. Aussies won the series 2-0 by winning the 2nd match today. Virat got out for another unlucky duck. Some media people are speculating end of his ODI career as well. Steve Waugh seems to be active with a lot of things.

@JudyEv Funding for such causes can be tricky. Individuals cannot donate too much. Corporates do but at times, they think in terms of ROI(Return on Investment). At time, Corporates too are under Profit & survival pressures.

That's clever although it bothers me that the truck is parked in the barley. Surely no farmer would do that??

You're quite right. When we were taking photos at the riding section of a marathon we were asked not to drive on the stubble.

Something we seldom think about in damper climes, the risk of fire spreading. Mind you, with climate change we have recently had a few

Fires were always at the back of farmers' minds during harvest.
