What’s the point of lettuce?

United Kingdom

Okay, so if you are a tortoise I guess it’s different, but I really do not see the point of lettuce. It just doesn’t taste of anything really does it ! If I am trying to be good and I have salad I end up putting mayo on it ….kind of goes against why I’m having salad in the first place ! I will say ….the different salad leaves, the mixed ones we get in bags and the living salad trays we can get are lovely ! They actually have a taste to them. Anyway, what do you think ?

I really love a good salad, but I can't put lettuce in it. It causes bowel blockages for me. Can't eat any raw fruits or veggies with peelings.

@mynameiskate It depends on several factors. I had most of my large intestine removed and can't digest a lot of things well.

I like salad too and like lettuce but never had the problem you described. You know your body better than anyone but doesn't that go against everything you read about. Apparently eating raw greens and fruit is suppose to do the opposite?

@1creekgirl What do you eat with assurance things will be digested. Eggs, veggies cooked and fruits cooked only (no nuts) breads? Meat? Your answer may help me with an issue I am having. Thanks in advance.

Lettuce is the primary ingredient for a salad. You put these healthy things on a salad, like cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, etc., THEN load it up with unhealthy things like cheese and high-fat dressing, and convince yourself that you’re eating healthily.

Mayo on just lettuce? You mean straight Mayo, or a dressing that has Mayo in it?

@traceyjayne Lettuce is nothing more than the filler that restaurants use to pack out your plate and make it look like you’re getting loads of food. And posh lettuce is “hand selected leaves”. I asked a waitress once “whose hands picked the special leaves?” I have also asked in whose home the home made scones were baked. Not appreciated. It also gets my goat when cafes sell “award winning coffee” Can I see the award please?

I do not even arrive to digest lettuce and I do not like the taste, if we can call it a taste.

I think you must be eating the wrong kind of lettuce! Iceberg has basically no flavour and no nutritional value, but other types have plenty.

I don't care for iceberg lettuce. It has no taste or healthy goodies in it. I like to use broccoli as a base instead of lettuce.

We used to have what we call a round lettuce …..total waste of time . Iceberg is crunchier and crisper but I find very little taste. Like you say no health goodies …. Never thought of using broccoli ……

@Traceyjayne I LOVE broccoli and then you can add chicken, sunflower seeds, hard boiled eggs, garbanzo beans, carrots.....whatever!

I like lettuce. It's cheap and gets the job done, and when I make a salad it's usually loaded with other things, so it's a nice little fiber filler. We eat a lot of it around here.
