Is it better to work for passion or security?

My brother is a professional musician. He'll tell you that he's never worked a day in his life. He's very happy. He's had to do gig work for 45 years but he's made it work. Me, on the other hand, never found my true calling. I was good at several things, but it wasn't my passion. I made good money but it wasn't fulfilling. So I ask you, is it better to work for passion or security?

If you are lucky enough to get your dream job, then you can work for passion and security. I was most happy when I worked for myself and then in accounting since I'm very detail oriented...but were they my dream jobs? No. In today's economy most people will tell you they work for security.

That's great that your brother has been able to follow his dream this way. I guess I'd go with security but that's just me.

Talking Heads once sang, “If your work isn’t what you love then something isn’t right.” Not everyone is blessed to get a paycheck doing something they love; however, I tried to make the paycheck gigs fulfilling as best I could.

It is only a good idea to work for one's passion if 1) it pays the bills 2) provides for more than your needs and 3) allows one to earn enough to save and invest enough to buy future freedom. Otherwise you have to seek out the highest earnings possible. Just my two cents worth. Do what you must until you have enough money to do what you want. To me that is the only correct answer.
