Helping others help themselves through Kiva

Back in September 2019, long-term member @DeborahDiane wrote about Kiva and how she donates to this charity. Because of her post I donated $25 to a lady in Nicaragua. Others loaned to the same lady and that loan has now been paid back in full. Once I was refunded by $25, I lent to another person. It’s taken a while but six years later, I’ve lent the same $25 to eight people, all of whom have paid me back. I’ve also donated a requested small amount to help with administrative costs but all of my $25 goes to the person needing the money. Yesterday, I lent another $75 as it is such a good cause. I get to choose who the money goes to and I get emails as, bit by bit, the person repays their loan. We’re not regular church-goers and don’t tithe but we try to give back to society in other ways. The photo was taken from the top of Baladjie Rock. We free-camped there for two days and actually managed to climb to the top. I’ll write more about it later. Those are salt lakes in the background.

How odd that you are mentioning Kiva, we talked about this organization only a few days ago with Deborah. It's a place where I like to go to help. It's good to know that some people can start their small business thanks to us.

I didn't realise my loan had been fully repaid until I got the email so then I had to choose another recipient. One of the new ones is in Kenya.

@LadyDuck and @JudyEv - It really is a nice coincidence that you wrote about Kiva today. Yes, Anna and I chatted about it just the other day. I have also continued to reloan the money and the last time I looked I had donated over $600, although most of it is the same money I have donated over and over again. What an easy and worthwhile way to help others!

That sounds such a good organization. You not only get to help genuine needy people, but your loan is also paid back. How beautiful it is that the same money can be lend to more and more needy people down the lane. A very beautiful way of functioning.

Once you make the intial loan, you're not continually having to add to it. I like that.

It's nice that I don't have to keep adding money but my small amount keeps doing some good.

I thought so. I mostly choose women on farms who need help - maybe to buy another cow or build a shelter perhaps,.

It's interesting to choose who you're going to help and to see what they want to do with the money.

I like that it's just the one donation but it keeps churning over albeit slowly.

I donate to people who earnestly need money. Usually I donate food and clothes to people who need them.

Once you've been repaid you can re-donate or get your money back.
