The Oddest Halloween Traditions Around the World

Of course, in Ireland, Scotland and some here in the U.S enjoy this time of year with a celebration called Samhain with bonfires and disguises to ward off evil spirits. We don't have near the odd Halloween traditions as I found some other countries have. Look at a few I found: * In Ireland children dress up and preform dances or jokes to earn treats from neighbors. * In Mexico families-built altars with sugar skulls, marigolds, and family photographs. A bright and striking celebration honoring the dead with joy and food. * In China families burn money and offer food to wondering spirits in what is called the Hungry Ghost Festival. * In Haiti they celebrate Fete de Morts, a vodou tradition honoring Gede spirits and Baron Samedi with rum offerings, music and cemetery vigils. Some of those make ours sort of ho hummish.

Very interesting. I didn't take my children trick-or-treating and we would watch movies with a small home party. Churches do harvest festivals and trunk-or-treats here. Those are safer.

I like the Irish ones, the kids have to earn their candies in one way or another.

@celticeagle Slightly different. The kids can earn their candies by having creative dressing up of characters that they want to be.

Samhain predates any Christian mockery. I like to go outside on that night and thank the Spirits for all they have given to the world. It's a sacred night, not just an excuse to fill up with treats.

You're right. I didn't feel I do enough to thank them.

No wonder that a lot of Mexican characters in the entertainment industry dress up in scary costumes around Halloween.

There is no Halloween tradition in my country, but in the last few years, parents have started buying costumes for their children.

As long as you have friends and family you can even make your own traditions, I have no one so I not longer celebrate any holidays but will always light a candle for Jesus' birthday,

I remember being in Ireland one Halloween day and all the kids were dressed up. It is a huge thing there.

Wow, those are some fascinating traditions! It's amazing how different cultures have their own way of celebrating Halloweens. Here in my country, the Philippines, we don't really call it Halloween, we call it all souls day, where we celebrate the memory of our loved ones when they were still here in the land of the living.

Yes, it is. All Souls Day is what it is partially. I think here it is Halloween for the kids.
