Did you know that candles have been around for 5000 years. They were used in Egypt and Rome.
When America started making candles they used wax for the first time.
Than in 1825 a candle making machine was invented.
That started the candles that we have today.
They have a scent and they smell good while they are burning.
Of course they are very expenses.
But I do love to burn them on a cold night to warm up the area that I am in.

My relatives and myself used to use candles to warm up an evening until my relatives adopted cats as companions and the fear of the cats knocking down the candles which could start house fires.

They used wax for a long time before the Americas were discovered. They were extremely expensive so only royals and those types could burn them. They also still had a honey scent, so burning them smelled sweet.
It was still a long time before the people in the Americas could do with more than tallow candles, and needless to say, they didn't smell sweet.
Yes, candles have been around a long time, but most people could only use oil burners, a small dish with oil and a wick at one, or both, ends. This are one of the reasons there were so many fires, because anything the oil landed on and if the wick was burning then there was a better than 50% chance it would spread. It is on a wood table... or worse... This is why many places, i.e. plantations, the 'cook house' was not attached to the main house.

Yup. I'm burning two candles (tea lights actually) right now to "warm up" the place... I'm too cheap to turn up the furnace and I have a million candles I've gotten over the years for free or cheap.

Interesting facts!
Well, we used to have days of big power cuts in 1990s and often used to study with candles.
We always remember those days of struggle and how we still used to enjoy our times then!
By the way, what does the image you shared signifies?

I love candles but can't have them anymore because of the scents due to son's condition. Shame I miss them. I used to like the Yankee candles especially the fall scents.

Strong scented candles give me a headache; but I do have a ton of different kinds of candles.
