Kids Will Be Kids

I remember it being my first day of real school. It was Mrs. Moore's class in the first grade. Mrs. Moore came into the classroom and introduced herself and then proceeded to welcome us by giving us each a cupcake, which she carefully set at the corner of our desk with a small instruction. "Now, don't eat these until everyone has each gotten one and I tell you to." Keep in mind I was a delicate 6-years old, and someone had just put a delicious cupcake with lots of frosting in front of me, and your ears are not fully connected to your brain yet, especially with such a marvelous distraction laid before you. As Mrs. Moore went to the next row, I clutched hold of mine and took a huge bite out of it, icing forming a moustache on my upper lip. A girl next to me, and I can't remember her name, but she had curly hair and a flower dress, leaned over and said, "The teacher said not to eat that until she said so, dummy." I was mortified and devastated, turned my cupcake in hand upside down half eaten on my desk and burst into tears. Nowadays this would not have been my reaction, of course, but when you're 6 it's a different world. At least I can laugh about it today and I'd guess had a few more years been under my belt, this cupcake would have been smashed against her cute little face and my first of many trips to the principal's office would have been had.

I have no idea how I would have reacted, I imagine I would have said to the girl "mind your own business".

@porwest I don't believe that, I had 3 boys myself & they have their OWN way if thinking.

A shame that's your abiding memory of starting school. Traumatic events do stick in the memory better than happy ones, unfortunately.

@porwest That's what's sad about it. No happy memories of your first school day

As I always say, though, it's moments like this you remember the most. That moment in time sticks in my mind as though it was yesterday.

Yes, young boys do not have a connection between ears and brain.

No one is above the TEACHER'S LAWS. There is always a tattle tale in your midst isn't there, just like Judy on Leave it to Beaver.

Yes. Always. I wonder where this girl is now? What did she wind up as? Is she rich, poor? Is she a Karen? I have no idea. I guess I can leave it to my imagination and make her whatever I wanted her to turn out to be. lol
