I think it was part of the whole pay it back culture but some one, probably many people feft quarters on the side walls by the carts. So, those who wanted the cart didn't ha ve to pay...There were like 8 to 10 quarters there. Nobody was scooping up because it was a kindness. I used one, and didn't put another there, but I did not fasten the cart so it was free for the next person...and actually they would make a quarter when they took it back. I actually tried giving a cart to a woman in the parking lot, but she said she didn't need it. This Aldi was in a sort of upscale area, I can think of some where the quarter wall would not work. Have you seen any random acts of kindness lately?

That's one of the cool things about Aldi. There's a pizza place that announced it's giving free lunches (soup and salad and breadsticks) for senior citizens because of the shutdown. That makes me feel good.

All our grocery stores have the "coin" system for the carts, we have to insert the equivalent of $ 1.00, so most people bring them back and get their coin back. Often there are young boys who asks if you want that they take care of the cars and you tell them to keep the coin.

The only stores here that charge for carts is Aldi, but since you get it back at the end not sure why they do it, although I am sure the major factor is keeping the parking lot clean.

@LadyDuck The stores here have cart Corrales in the parking lots and they usually end up there. Of course store employees have to pick them up various times of the day.

@snowy22315 - All stores charge for carts from a very long time. The only way to have people putting the carts back.

Yrs, I think it would only work in certain locations. Good on you giving your cart away.

@snowy22315 I was telling my teen son about your post. He even agreed that the quarters would immediately be gone here. I guess we can call cart giving "paying it forward" in a small way?

I don't get out much; so I only get to the doctors' offices or a rare meal out. That's nice about the quarters.

That's nice. I often seen loose carts when I shopped at our Aldi's. And I never hooked mine

I didn't count the quarters but there could have been as many as 15.

The Aldi I like the best that I go to the most often, does this. There are always quarters lined up on the brick wall by the carts, usually at least 3 or 4.
