When Hunger is Ignored

I am so disheartened about how the U.S. has been the last few years and is getting worse.
Children, the elderly, and disabled Americans are going hungry. SNAP benefits barely cover a single meal in today’s high grocery prices.
Those ignorant of SNAP will say how they can go to work, stop the entitlement, and should eat beans and rice. Close to 88% do work. If they have kids, a lot of money goes to day care. There are rigorous screenings in place to even be approved so fraud is maybe 3% or less.
Yet, I'll hear, "well, I work three jobs and care for my kids...." I want to ask if they want a trophy or something. Not all are able to work. If someone has MS, ALS, stage IV cancer, 80 years old, they are expected to "just get a job?"
Now, cuts and delayed payments leave families scrambling. Partial weekly distributions create extra trips and costs, and the homeless, many disabled, are left with nothing if they aren't elderly, have approved disability payments or children.
No one should celebrate this suffering, yet it's disturbingly happening all over.
Poverty is not a moral failing. Anyone can be put in the same situation. All it takes is a major disaster, critical health crisis, job loss, or other circumstance.
You can fill up on beans and rice but nutrients will lack. If you do a diet of macaroni, rice, potatoes and beans, expect weight gain. Expect those with diabetes, Hashimoto's, kidney failure, inflammation issues (arthritis etc.), to begin having major more health issues. Of course, there was one person who recently answered that with, "oh, but they won't be hungry!"
I understand the shut down. Health cost is outrageous. Medicaid cuts are alarming. We still need to feed our people.
It's really scary out their now. Many are stepping up helping where I live including helping with animals. I hope other areas are as well.

I saw where a federal judge just ordered the trump administration to pay out for the SNAP benefits. But trump has asked for the judge to clarify the ruling.
He's such a jerk!

@noni1959 The judge didn't order him to pay full SNAP benefits and didn't tell him how much money has to come from the contingency funds for emergencies.

@DaddyEvil I didn't read that yet. I saw where some are going to weekly get 25% of what they usually do.

My late niece told me that a lot of poverty comes from some people comes from health issues and we should not assume that poor people are lazy.

I suffer from many different medical conditions that keep me from eating certain things, being in the cold or too hot. I cannot sit or stand too long. Some days I cannot even do that I have to stay resting or even asleep. It also changes each day or even each hour! I recently have lost a lot of my help and even some social security that I am entitled to, by a mistake on their part. Now I may end up homeless and cannot go to my Oncologist!
I pray for people adults and children in need!

I am so sorry. I discovered that most big hospitals have a social worker to help with some of those things, and they did help my son. If you have one handy please call and ask to speak with one, it might be worth it!!

Thank you for posting this. Ignorant people (some here) think it’s only for people who don’t have jobs. A ton of people who get them certainly DO work, and work hard! I just read a TSA agent talking about no SNAP benefits and also working with no pay. She’s got three kids.
And pardon me for “ letting”a man run me off the road, and leaving me with a back injury that changed my life forever. I mean, give the snobbery a break. Who can prepare for that?

Sadly, there was a mylot member here that was just like the other. Constantly going on about his wealth, didn't feel sorry for those eating off his taxes etc. Most those on benefits do work and pay taxes too. Many of those who are not working, have paid in as well. I had to block him. It was easier than letting him anger me with his bragging BS. I usually don't get into anything political or that can cause arguments but this is hard for me to see. I'm not on SNAP but know someone who is and she gets a whole $89 a month. Some areas are so much higher in food too, even with low wages. I'm so sorry about your back injury. I never expected to have psoriatic arthritis, a pacemaker and other issues.

It is awful. Thank goodness a bunch of Churches in my town let everyone know that they have food to distribute to those in need.

There is a fake believe that all those who are poor are lazy people who did nothing to improve their condition. Some of those people have serious health issues and they cannot "improve" their condition because they cannot work. Without a little help I fear that some will not have enough money to buy food. It's sad!

The elderly in many countries are enduring hunger and mental agony in many countries.
And there are some who are not able to work for health reasons.
Governments should take proactive steps in civilized societies at least to see that they do not suffer in their supposed golden years. .

It's a crazy world we all live in, & your right there's a lot of people
going without & a lot that have no 1 to help family or friend wise.
I've been watching the news & this isn't my 1st rodeo with this
I've learned for the past 20 yrs if you don't stock up on food &
meds that when the govt goes crazy EVERYTHING else follows
that means food meds any & ALL supplies that we ALL need.
That's why I have learned how to stock up on my meds & food
& supplies where it will buy us some time to wait it out.

@2ndchances24 that is good you can do that. Not everyone can. Some are homeless, in small campers, renting small rooms etc. Or they can barely buy enough for the whole month. I can't stock up on my medications. It won't be covered and one is over $9K a month. Thankfully, between insurances and the assistance with the medication manufacturer, I get the rest covered.
