WOW WOW WOW, what a World Series! It had everything but a rain delay (thankfully)…even a benches-clearing “thing.” (Most people refer to “bench-clearing brawls” in baseball as the benches clear and everyone meets on the diamond with nasty looks on their faces…there aren’t a lot of actual fights in baseball.) Congratulations to the L.A. Dodgers for winning, and to the Toronto Blue Jays for a memorable Fall Classic. We now return you to standard time with an instrumental.
The Entertainer - Marvin Hamlisch
Last year I did a countdown of Texas musicians, and I included in the list the great Scott Joplin. Joplin was a well-known composer; however, he died (in 1917) before records became a big thing. As a result, the scant recordings of him that exist are from piano rolls.
Long forgotten, to the point where his grave went unmarked for decades, Joplin’s music roared back in a big way in 1973, courtesy of Marvin Hamlisch. In doing the music for the Redford/Newman film The Sting, Hamlisch brought the music of Scott Joplin to the world once again…and in a big way. He won an Oscar and a Grammy for his work on the soundtrack (the Grammy awarded to this song). In a funny twist, he won a couple of other Oscars in 1973….for a different movie (The Way We Were).
The Hamlisch version made the Billboard top three and gave the world Joplin’s music again. After the success of this song, Joplin’s grave received a headstone. And we were all enriched with the timeless music of a pre-recording great.

This was very popular, of course I remember it.
I have heard the story about Joplin before, sad that he didn't have a headstone for so many years.

Yes, I did know he was black. And sadly, you are correct. It's always nicer to honor someone when they are actually alive, but he didn't really have that.

That was a great game, especially for a game 7/ and pretty good world series overall. I do get irritated with the sports pundits. This shows you why baseball is is not a thing of the past. What ever dude, baseball has always been that way and why it never falls off the map. Some years better than others like any sport,. and a good world series that was fairly competitive but was not one of the top three of all time.
Game 7 sure, but the whole series was dominated by Toronto with the pesky LA just finding a way to win. To their credit.
Funny, the celebration, everyone waiting for them to light LA on fire and everyone going where is ICE. They so infatuated with this place.

@FourWalls I hope not, thats one of the reasons I wanted Toronto to win because they would not be invited and it hurts my heart when people's role models show up for A guy that is fundamentally trying to break the constitution. My opinion of course.

I said this before, you've got really good taste. This is a parade kinda tune, my mind conjures a band walking down a street with girls twirling those thingy bobs ..... hey, I saw that in a couple movies, too bad I never saw it for real
I hope Amazon has the sting in their lineup. I've always like Paul, he was sooooooooooooo handsome.

Thanks, glad you like it. Thanks for the compliment.
I think Newman had it all over Redford in the looks department. Paul was gorgeous.

It sounded so fresh in the 70s, hard to believe it was 70 years old then!

It was a really great series. I love the Series being a sweep only when a team I’m heavily rooting for is in it (like what the Reds did in 1976 and 1990
).
Hope you enjoy this song!

I understand that. I learned to play it on guitar because my mom loved it so much (and I didn’t know how to play piano
).
).
