Camping in the shadow of Mt Trio, Western Australia

We’ve been away at a Country Music Muster and have enjoyed listening to a variety of artists who have all been entertaining. The venue was in the shadow of Mt Trio which is part of the Stirling Ranges in the southern region of Western Australia. Another of the peaks there is Bluff Knoll which is a popular hiking area and even has snow on it from time to time. On the way, we stayed at Gnowangerup, the nearest town. The Gnowangerup SES (State Emergency Service) had a lot of volunteers at the event and we learnt that they’ve played a hand in rescuing twelve hikers over the year who have got into trouble in the ranges. What would we do without volunteers?

You had some good days away. Volunteers have so much work to do rescuing hikers even here. People who go climbing when the weather is bad and they wear sneakers and only a t-shirt!

@JudyEv - I have read interviews and some volunteers were really sick of people who do stupid things and they risk their life to go to help.

Volunteers risk their lives sometimes. They must get sick of helping stupid people sometimes.

When I was younger, I enjoyed hiking with friends but wouldn't dare do that now. My balance can disappear one minute to the next and I'd need help getting back to the car or to the house.

Some don't think about the conditions so they may not take water or their footwear might be inadequate, etc.

@JudyEv Some people don't think before they do anything.

I can tell you one thing; I will never be a hiker that has to be rescued. Not because I am so well versed in survival, but because I contain none of that hiking spirit so many people have.

It was very relaxing. The mountains changed colour so often throughout the day.

Glad you had a great time at the festival! We have a group based out of Louisiana that’s called the Cajun Navy, and they rose to fame helping people in a number of floods. They’re all volunteers, just “regular people” with boats who show up to help! You’re right, what would we do without them!

Volunteers become also rans when it comes to acknowledging the rescue missions. I like the bluish tinge on this mountain. We hardly think of the one who gives it all to us for free!

That looks so beautiful and scenic. I have always liked hiking. But now I am not able to do much with health and limitations. I prefer to go on safe trails and that are not too steep or rocky. Yes, volunteers do so much out of good will. Hats off to them!
