Plane Crash in Town

Good evening, everyone. We have had a national news item happen here in Louisville this afternoon. There was a plane crash at Louisville International Airport. First, this was NOT near @LooeyVille -- she lives in the other end of town and is okay. Second, it IS near me. I do live "near" the airport, but not close enough to be affected directly. All of the city from the airport north to the Ohio River is under a "shelter in place" because of the smoke (and the possibility of hazardous materials in the garbage dump or recycling areas). Please do keep the city and the people affected in your thoughts and prayers. There were believed to be seven people on the plane; however, this crashed off the airport property so it may have hit businesses or cars on the way home. WAVE3 news coverage:

Can't believe how foggy it looks looking at the moon, caused by the smoke.

Thanks. There's a bar they keep mentioning on the news, but they've reported on Facebook that everyone evacuated the area safely. That's truly a blessing.

@FourWalls Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. Son just said, he wondered if it was due to air traffic control, and he hoped not. It will no doubt be awhile before anyone knows what caused it.

I agree. As tragic as it is, that wasn’t a commercial airline, which would have made the toll unimaginable.

I heard it on the radio in the car . . . I immediately thought of you two - glad to hear y'all are safe and not affected. Heard plane was carrying a lot of fuel? Keeping my thoughts for those out that way!

It was heading nonstop to Honolulu, an eight hour flight. That’s 25,000 pounds of fuel. Then…it hit an oil recycling storage facility.

The way they're showing things, it's probably worse. But the one good news is that a sports bar that they keep referencing on the news has reported on Facebook that everyone in the bar has safely evacuated the area.

@DaddyEvil -- the governor is having a news conference right now, and he said that Ford Motor Plant near where the crash happened was not hit.

The governor is holding a press conference, and he's not optimistic. I'm sure the government officials know a lot more than they're saying.

I pray that no one was seriously injured and no one will be due to smoke or whatnot. I'm glad you're safe.

I will pray all 16 are found with minimal injuries. Sometimes it's best not to imagine the worst scenario.

@rebelann — I know. Last night our governor had to admit that he told everyone there would be a hundred deaths in a candle factory hit by the Mayfield tornado in 2021…and it turned out to be 13 killed.

We have 16 missing as of the latest update, and nine fatalities. I can’t imagine how bad things would be if that had been a commercial plane.

This is the first major plane crash in Louisville since 1956. It's horrible. When my parents first divorced my mom and I lived in apartments across the interstate from the airport. (That area was not affected directly.)

It wasn’t a commercial airliner, so it wasn’t an “international” story.

@FourWalls - I have found the news online, it was a UPS plane. We assisted at a plane crash years ago, while sitting at an outside restaurant in Marina del Rey (Los Angeles).

I hope that the plane crash in Kentucky did not cause extreme damage to property and cause persons to lose their lives.

As far as we know right now, there are 12 fatalities, one of which was a child, with 16 missing. Two businesses that they know of were destroyed. The wing of the plane cut a path through the roof of a building (believe it was a UPS building) on the way down.

I heard about this. There have been way too many plane crashes lately. A lack of air traffic controllers? Who knows.

Most of those lights were airport lights. My dear aunt of blessed memory lost her home to airport expansion in the early 1990s. It was much more congested around the airport with neighborhoods 40 years ago.
