Cucumber and onion for Sunday tea …..

United Kingdom

Some of you may have had this before and some of you may not believe it to be true …..but it is, honestly. One of the most popular things we had for tea on a Sunday when I was a child was cucumber and onion sandwiches. Sometimes Mom and I will make it nowadays too. So. What is it ….? Simply sliced cucumber and sliced onion in a dish of vinegar….left at least overnight. To eat , simply get the cucumber and onion out of the vinegar and eat it straight off a plate or use it as a sandwich filling. It is truly delicious….and a childhood memory. Have you had this before ? Would you try it ?

I’ve never tried that, and I’m not sure I have heard of it. But I would definitely try it although I’m not sure it would settle well. I try to give everything at least one chance.

I remember mom making and eating that. I don't remember dad eating it, though. And none of us kids would eat it, either. I liked cucumbers sliced fresh and I'd eat slices of sweet onions but I didn't like vinegar. (I don't really like vinegar now, either.)

@Traceyjayne I eat fries with mayo and ketchup mixed together. I don't know how popular cucumber and onion is here. As veggies, they go over well for most people but I haven't seen/heard of anyone else eating them with vinegar. Mom was the only person I ever saw eating them like that.

@DaddyEvil in my mind I guess I thought that cucumber and onion was something that came from the war years. When food was rationed and you had to invent a lot of meals using the basics. I could be wrong though.

@traceyjayne Sounds alright. Did you have sugar sandwiches? I loved and hated those. And what about panede?
