Food I remember from my childhood …..

United Kingdom

I did a post about cucumber and onion in vinegar a few days ago, as we used to have that a lot when I was a child. We make it occasionally nowadays. It got me thinking about other foods I remembered from my childhood. Ski yogurts. I haven’t seen any of those in years. Sweetheart pudding. This was in a can, a bit like thick yogurt. You added milk to it and gave it a whisk, put it in dishes and placed it in the fridge. I liked the peach flavour. Celery , we always used to have celery sticks in a jug at my Nans house, certainly at Christmas. I know it’s still readily available but we don’t seem to buy it anymore. Oxtail soup. I usually make my own these days but sometimes get a chicken one for The Mister. But I haven’t seen oxtail soup for ages. What foods do you remember from your childhood ?

My mother made horrible things like tripe and smelts. She was a terrible cook but a wonderful baker. Do you remember the brown bread in a can?

After we butchered a calf, mom would make scrambled eggs and calf brains. I wouldn't eat that! She made oxtail soup after we butchered a calf, too. Once in a while mom cooked mountain oysters. I liked those. We ate tame rabbits a lot. Once in a while one of my older brothers would go fishing for mud turtles and would make turtle soup. (It was bright green and looked greasy so I wouldn't eat that, either.)

I bet fresh oxtail soup was nice and tasty. My Nan made a great rabbit stew . I’m afraid I wouldn’t want the other things you mentioned.

@Traceyjayne My brothers loved turtle soup! Mom and dad both loved scrambled eggs with calf brains. Mom always breaded and fried rabbits. And oxtail soup was always good.

I don’t really remember anything too special. I do remember we didn’t like bananas so she’d take dry jello mix, roll a banana in it and then we’d eat it. I liked cherry the best; it was delicious. She also made chicken Kiev on my sister’s birthday since she loved it so much.

My Mom was a great cook and I have fond memories of her homemade fried chicken she would make. It was awesome.

The "ancestor of Nutella", it was not a cream, but it a hazelnut-ciocolate stick by Ferrero, called Gianduiot. It was a lot better and without palm oil of course.

@Traceyjayne Ferrero did not export in those times but the company made good products. Now they are a big rich company and I do not buy their products.

Mum used to make what we called 'mock fish'. I think they were basically cheese patties. We'd also have cheese and onion pie which was delicious.
