I'm Glad I Decided to Get the Hock...

Yes, I am a bean girl.
I love good beans. I have decided that kidney beans just don't always turn out well and so I got pinto beans this time. My daughter cooked them with the ham hock I got. The price is not like it used to be back 20-30 years ago.
They taste great. The ham hock is nice and tender, the beans cooked to perfection. And the Jif brand cornbread just adds to it.
Eating these remind me of my childhood. My grandmother was taking care of a anemic young woman who was a neighbor. She would feed her beans and her own canned grape juice. (Not together, silly) Both have iron in them. The woman went from a sighing and sad convalescent to a smiling and talkative one.

A ham hock, or just a bone from a baked ham, makes all the difference in ham and beans. My family has always loved them. I don't use Jiffy but just make my own cornbread, it always disappears very fast and no one complains!

I buy the Jiff brand because it is easier for my daughter to fix. Some basics are just beyond her so I try to make it easy.

I can only eat black beans as the others make my tummy swell with gases. I used to cook beans with pork skin among other ingredients in my youth. Those were the days!

I LOVE beans as you know and can no longer have them due to the kidney disease. I'm glad yours turned out so well.

They were good. We just hadn't used the ham hocks because of the price but I decided to get one this time.
