Does your cat follow you around the house? And, when you get up to go to bed does your cat follow you to bed too? It's not just a coincidence. Behavioral researchers feel that cats synchronize their pattern as a form of attachment. They may not be tired, but you are a part of their social structure.
Cats enjoy a temp of between the mid 80s and 90s and so our body makes for the perfect thermal zone for them. They also rely heavily on scent to navigate and confirm a feeling of emotion security. When they sleep on you, they are reinforcing that emotional signal.
The rise and fall of your breathing are similar to the purring a cat does to lull himself off to dreamland.
Being territorial by nature their excepting you means you are a trusted ally in their world. They can monitor their environment while staying near the person they trust most.
The familiar weight and scent of their human can actually help to relive stress they may be feeling. That physical closeness is one of the purest gestures of companionship in the animal world.
The picture is from my collection.

Most of the cats in the house like to stay in their places of rest through the day or walk inside the bedroom during the day or late night.

I have an unplanned "at home" day. Both the boys are here in the office with me. Each on a blanket on the floor.

Since I will never have another cat this does not apply to me,

I had a dog that would wait on the landing for me to go upstairs and take a nap. He knew what time every night that I would go upstairs. He'd lay on the rug next to the bed and nap with me. So comforting.

They watch us all the time. They are comforting. Some people don't like that but I sure do.

Many people are that way while others don't mind a feline nearby.
