I Got it at the Flea Market Yesterday

I don't normally buy money, but I do keep some bills and coins from time to time that I find interesting, or that were given to me. I have mentioned about those a few times here, including a 1950s $5 silver certificate that my grandfather gave to me some years back. But walking around the flea market yesterday, where there are several booths attended by coin collectors selling their wares, I came across a box full of buffalo nickels for 50 cents each. I picked one up and bought it. Just for kicks and grins. It turns out to be a 1929 nickel in what is considered "good" condition, which is the lowest possible grade. It's worth about 85 cents at full value—or probably about what I actually paid for it. 50 cents. I just bought it because I didn't have one, 50 cents wasn't going to break me, and I just think it's neat. It's not exactly anything special or rare, of course, but what the heck? Do you have any interesting coins or bills?

This is a pretty coin, why not to buy at that price. I have a box full of coins. Reading your post, I just checked inside and I found several old Monte Carlo 1 cent coins. Online they are sold at about $ 50 each. I will keep one and sell all the others.

Wow. That's a good find. How many do you have to sell?

@porwest - I must have a dozen. I remember that when I heard that it was going to be discontinued, I collected all those I could find and put in a bag.

@LadyDuck That would be a nice little payday if you could, indeed, fetch $50 a piece for them.

I also collect money and I have some that was used in the 1970s here. When I travel, I make sure I keep one or two as a souvenir

I mean, at the end of the day, what are we really out, right? If it's different, I have at least some interest in it.

I had some but cashed them in years ago when I was broke and unemployed.

@BarBaraPrz Hmm. Well, that signals an ever bigger problem. I doubt you ever had one to begin with, though. I mean, to be real here. One thing I can honestly say I have never done is...run out of money. It's just never happened to me. Knock on wood.

I guess that would be good enough reason. Being unemployed has never left me in a pickle. I figured out long ago that they recommend having an emergency fund with 6-months salary in it for a reason.

I have a freshly minted penny from 2024. I suspect this will be worth more down the road

@porwest Yes, I don't expect it to be worth much..but nearly uncirculated coins are always worth more. I can always pass it down to descendents if need be. I have more hopes for my Kobe Bryant card.

lol. Consider that we have enough pennies in circulation, granted tucked away, to last at least 50 years, it might be some time before it's worth even 2 cents. But I admire your ambition. lol The estimation is that there are 240 billion pennies in jars, between seat cushions and in car consoles. Now, considering 2025 is the last minting, if you have one of those and hold onto it for 300 years.... It might be worth at least 3 cents.

I save foreign bills and coins. I used to have a Silver Certificate $1 bill and a $2 bill but the coin collector told me to just spend them

I have a few buffalo nickels that I have received in change over the years (people really should pay more attention lol), none of them are probably in good enough condition to be of value. But, like you said, sometimes it's cool just to have something for kicks and grins. I do have a roll of Krugerrand gold coins (10 coins total) in my safe that my mom gave me years and years ago when she went on a gold-buying kick. They are in mint condition, since I've never opened the roll. I'm sure they're worth a pretty penny, but I plan to just hold on to them for--like you said--kicks and grins.
