In Memory of Dad

Looking through some old papers and notebooks today, I found some old poems of mine. They were written in Latvian. This one was written 8 years after my dad died, so I was 18, and the memories still could hurt. I translated the poem, and it reflects one winter when Dad and I went to Owl’s Head Park in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, and I was about four years old. At the Park Eight years have gone by, since you quietly said to me, “Let’s build a snowman!” To me it seems, as if it was just yesterday, like in some dream it all went too quickly. Life keeps flowing on and on, now only imaginative footprints, remain on a snowy night, but the snowman and you have disappeared— while bright memories remain.

@RasmaSandra Though it may have been a while back, the memory is still crystal clear. I have a memory of my father peeling an apple for me near our car during vacationing in San Francisco - I think I was about 3.

@much2say I remember we built that snowman right by the gates to the park and I can imagine how we looked a small child barely up to dad's knee and a man 6 feet tall.

@JudyEv my father was a popular Latvian writer and poet, and if he could have been around at this times I can just imagine how much he could have done with a PC to write on. Sometimes I write a poem and suddenly my fingers fly over the keys and when I am done a read the poem and look up and say, Thank you, dad knowing he helped.

I don´t know why it took me so long to check online about Latvia as I have known you here for so long. Maybe it was your beautiful poem. Thank you, friend. You have given me today yet another piece of the world.
