The collage spotlights the West Australian town of Guilderton. It’s a small coastal town at the mouth of the Moore River. The sand bar across the river mouth regularly opens and closes depending on the seasons. In 1983, a brick tower-style lighthouse was built near the river mouth. It was the last of its kind to be built in Australia. In 1931, 40 silver guilder coins were found in the nearby sandhills and hence the area became known as Guilderton. It’s believed the coins were from the Dutch ship, Verguide Draeck (Gilt Dragon) which foundered on a nearby reef in 1656. The Dutch and French had landed on our shores well before the English but it was the latter that hoisted their flag and decided they’d take over this land. The British had a great taste for new territories in those days.

@JudyEv Yes, and they'd make nice collector's editions, quite beside the monetary value.

Those coins would be worth a mint now. Pardon the pun! I'm glad you like the photos.

Looks like a nice spot! I guess the Dutch maybe thought they had enough on their hands having colonized South Africa in 1652.

@JudyEv I didn't know the French explored that region. Maybe they decided it was too much to take on because they were concentrating on colonizing north and central America at the time.

@Fleura From what I remember, I think the French were keen but were just a bit too late. England got here first.

It's a pretty little town. You could well be right about the Dutch thinking better of colonizing Australia. The French passed it over too. They did a lot of exploration along the south coast and left behind names like 'D'Entrecastaux Park', 'Frenchman's Peak', etc.
