A happy but bittersweet memory

18 years ago my ex and I got engaged. I've written about it before but oh well I'll write about it again.
It popped into my mind as I was driving back here from work. He proposed the night before Thanksgiving back in 2007.
He and I had plans to go to a bar/restaurant called Klee's over on the island. The plan was to meet my sister and cousin there for drinks and apps. We got over to Seaside but instead of going to Klee's he drove up to the beach. I was like "what are you doing? You passed the place!" He said "oh I haven't been to the beach this year so I just want to see it." I was so confused because I'm the one who loves the beach. He isn't much of a fan. We walked onto the beach and then he proposed. I wish I could remember how he started off but it was so long ago. I do vividly remember him actually saying "will you marry me?" though so that's something. The ring was the very same one he designed just months after we started dating. . . which was 5 years earlier.
It was a princess-cut (square) diamond with blue sapphire baguettes on each side.
We never did make it to Klee's. I texted a picture of the ring on my finger to my mother, sister, and cousin. My sister had an absolute meltdown because her former fiance broke up with her the night before Thanksgiving just the year before.
So we wound up going to what then was our usual hangout and our parents met us there for drinks and dinner. We were too excited to care about my sister's tantrum.
Knowing then what I know now 6 years after our divorce. . . I would say yes all over again.

I’m sorry it ended the way it did. We never think it will happen, and sometimes it does and it’s painful.

That is a wonderful memory and I know how it always comes up at this time of year. Many of my memories pop up at certain times of the year. Cherish it; I'm only sorry that it did not last for you two.
