Just another lemon tree.

Gentlemen who reach retirement need to find new interests, as do ladies. It’s perhaps more noticeable in gentlemen because ladies, to my observation, are more sociable and continue with the friendships and activities already established in the normal run of life. Perhaps I’ve got that one wrong. Anyway, one of my new areas of interest is the cultivating of lemon trees. I have no pretension of harvesting the fruit of my labours - not in Ireland anyway. I currently have three trees sown from pips in pots, and the specimen pictured was sown just two months ago. In the summer I’ll move them outside to a sheltered spot in the garden then bring them inside in Autumn. The problem with such a hobby is obvious - eventual size. Anyway I like doing this - just because. Did you develop any peculiar interests when you retired? Are you open to surprising yourself? You never know, if you’re not yet retired you might suddenly be grabbed by the inexplicable urge to play the cello. I commend cultivating lemon trees if you are looking for a hobby that isn’t too time consuming or expensive.

I think I continued more my usual activities even after I retired. I spent a lot more time taking care of the garden and growing vegetables. I am a bit lost with no more a garden now. I think I will go back drawing and painting, I ordered yesterday some acrylic colors at Amazon.

Very nice sapling. Mom planted several lemon seeds on the South side of our farmhouse when I was a kid. Every time it started getting cooler outside, she'd run out with sheets to drape over each tree. She did harvest some lemons from them. (Missouri can get COLD in the winter. Down around -29C on really cold nights.) You never know, they might reward your patience and care with some fruit, even there.

I do love lemons. I hope you are successful, and some day you raise a triumphant fist that encases a lemon.

Your lemon tree looks very promising. I told myself when I retired I wanted to do 2 things: Sleep/nap whenever I wanted and to travel. I've been unable to do either. Sigh.
