Careful, You'll Burn Yourself!

Leave it to me to always find a way to do something stupid that almost gets me killed. Or, in this case, burned. Last weekend, my girlfriend wanted to go out to the shooting range to practice shooting her new 9mm pistol (an early Christmas present to her). She had recently completed a self-defense class and was eager to get some more shooting time in. I never turn down an opportunity to hit the range, especially since it was a great opportunity to try out my new semi-automatic rifle. After shooting it for a while, I wanted to try something out to see what would happen. The rifle has a flash suppressor/muzzle on the end of the barrel, and I decided to remove it. I thought that maybe it would just make the sound of the gun louder. I wanted to see if it changed the accuracy of the rifle in hitting the targets. Nope. Well, it did make the sound a lot louder, but there is a reason it is called a flash suppressor. lol. As I fired the weapon, flames shot out the end of the barrel. I singed all the hairs off of my arms. It wasn't so bad when I was in single-shot mode, but when I switched to fully semi-automatic and rapid fired the gun, that's when the fun started. It felt more like I was shooting a flame-thrower instead of a rifle. Luckily, it looked worse than it was. Aside from some singed hair on my arms, no other damage or harm was done. But I will know next time not to mess around with the accessories to my rifle! Have you ever done something stupid before that you instantly regretted? Of course, my girlfriend was standing off to the side laughing the entire time! I'm glad she found my pain to be so humorous!

Yes. But I don't want to talk about it.

I respect that. I’ve done some pretty embarrassing things in my life. Let’s just say I’m very thankful social media didn’t exist when I was young and stupid!

Even I got a good laugh…once I checked that I didn’t have any third degree burns.

I think we all have. In a way it's part of what makes us human. If I'm being honest with myself, I've done a lot of things. I move on and learn for next time.

@moffittjc No. I don't. Not personally. My husband has a couple, butthey're non-opportional. Have been for a long time now. I've never shot one, and I'm not sure I'd comfortable trying it with my degree of vision loss.

@moffittjc Yeah. My distance vision is scetchy at best. I am sure if I had to for personal safety, I could, but I've never had formal training or anything.

@kaylachan I guess it would be hard to safely shoot a weapon if your vision loss makes it hard to see what you’re shooting at!

Oh my goodness, I am glad you did not get hurt. I often do silly dangerous things and I know that I should not, because I always check that my husband is not around before trying.

@moffittjc You see, we both know that we are doing something we should not.

I’m usually the same way, I make sure no one is around when I try something stupid or dangerous.

@LadyDuck Yes, for sure! But do you feel a sense of guilty pleasure when you do it?

I grew up hunting to put food on our table. One of my brothers once was telling me he wanted me to shoot something on the ground so I did. The bullet ricocheted off a rock just under the surface of the ground and almost hit him... I never shot at the ground again!

@DaddyEvil For my own health, I'm glad I was okay too! One ricocheting bullet to the head can really ruin your day! LOL

I had a bullet ricochet off of something before when I was a teenager and felt/heard it whiz by my head. That was scary indeed, knowing how close that thing came to ending my life.

I love target shooting and ske-et shooting. I’m better at target shooting than I am at ske-et shooting.

I once got really close to the grill to light it and nearly caught a portion of my hair on fire, luckily I stepped back in shock and scolded myself.

I've done that before too, especially back when I used to cook on charcoal grills, and would dowse the coals with lighter fluid. I think I remember even burning off my eyebrows one time when I was too close to the grill when I lit it. lol
