Silent Night

Now onto the popular and my favorite Christmas carols. This carol originally was written in German. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and lyrics by Joseph Mohr in Salzburg, Austria. The carol was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011.
“Silent Night” was first recorded in 1905 and remains among the most popular Christmas songs. It was a part of all the Christmas plays at my grade school and made for one confused grade school kid—me. Why? Because from English I went to Christmas plays at my Latvian school where we sang the same song except in Latvian. Somehow I made it through the holidays.

@RasmaSandra I always wished that I spoke more than English. You are blessed to know two languages.

@Tampa_girl7 it is interesting when you understand two languages you have a choice between them and I say my morning prayers and the Lord's Prayer at night in Lativian,

Wow, that’s so interesting! I didn’t know ‘Silent Night’ was that old or that it started in German. I love how it brings back memories in so many languages. Do you still remember the Latvian version?

@RasmaSandra That’s really cool, Rasma! It’s amazing how your brain just flips it into Latvian when you hear the English version. Funny how music sticks with us like that
