Catching a boat on time

I wrote about my sister-in-law who is always late. There was one time when it was really important that she be on time and that was to board a catamaran for the reception for a niece’s wedding. The bride’s mother came up with a foolproof idea to ensure my SIL was on time. She made my SIL responsible for ensuring that everyone was on time at the jetty. The plan worked like a charm. We were all staying together in motel apartments and my SIL was running around hurrying everyone up. By making sure we were all on time, she was also there on time. And she never realised she’d been duped as it were.

You could also tell her everything was an hour before it was really happening. Better to get her there early than not get her there at all.

Sometimes that works. It depends on the occasion.

@JudyEv I agree. If someone has let slip the actual time, there's nothing you can do to keep someone who is determined to be late for everything on time. Sometimes I could get my first wife to get ready on time and actually leave so we got to an engagement before it began... But that didn't happen often. Most of the time I left her dithering around while Pretty and I left for the engagement. My wife showed up whenever she showed up.

That sounds like a Marine philosophy and it works almost to well every time. Its been used on me in boot camp and been used on people they think would make great leaders, but they do not want the responsibility. It is a burden but if you make it important and something that matters they end up showing their true colors every time of how good they are at leading. The problem is like dammit, that is why we were hiding. Maybe I was the only one who realized, dammit they got me, now I am never leading again. I think the best leaders are the ones that just feel, I am not sure yet. There is good ones when you see them but the best leaders are like I did my part, up to guys to finish it because its so draining on them.

And some people, once they get the chance to lead, or be 'the boss', turn into tyrants.

I am glad it worked and she did not fell asleep instead of hurrying everyone up.

I'm sure if push came to shove the rest of us would have got her there on time. It would have been unthinkable to let her miss it.

There was no way she would have wanted the boat to go without her.
