Today is Christmas Ravioli Day

and I am not going. It is a family tradition to make homemade spinach-meat ravioli to have for Christmas dinner. I remember taking my turn at the pasta maker crank even as a little kid after school. Then my parents got a KitchenAid and the pasta roller attachment and life became much easier. It was always a good time--talking, joking, working, drinking , and banging out like 800 homemade ravioli. The family does it every year a couple of weeks before Christmas because they need to freeze before they can be cooked. They would clump together into one big ball if they weren't. I didn't go the year my dad passed because I just couldn't handle doing the whole process without him there. I went last year though and it reminded me of how OVER IT I am about that family tradition. I am literally the only person who sits at the table throughout it all working working working. My sister occasionally joins in but then acts like she has to go check on her kids who are like 9 and 11 now. The "elders" sit on the couch and talk while wearing aprons as if they are helping at all. My cousin sometimes works but joins in the chat and makes drinks. A cousin's younger kids attempt to make the ravioli and then I get criticized because mine are somehow flawed. The whole thing has just stressed me out in the past several years. . . . . . so I'm not going today. I'm just not. I don't have to. I am a 48 year old woman who is choosing peace today. If they want the Christmas ravioli then they can make them on their own. Hey if they get mad then I am happy to skip Christmas dinner too. I know how to do it on my own in any case.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to go either. I think if you aren't there, it may hit them that they have not been helping much. Sometimes, traditions have to change, and it sounds as if this one may well be on the way out. You don't have to please people all the time, sometimes we have to do what is right for ourselves. This seems to be one of those times.

Yes I would have liked to have seen who was actually sitting at the table working.

@NJChicaa Oh, yes. I wonder if you will get flack about not coming and ''helping''--it sounds like they may have had to do some actual work!

One of the most important things about this time of year is to give yourself the gift of peace….however you have to. If that means ruffling feathers, so be it.

I’d like to see who gets stuck with doing all the work this year if it isn’t you.

I think that's a good decision. They might just realise how much you do if you're not there.

I wouldn't want to go if no one helps either.
