Three Cacti Named For Holidays

I remember my grandmother had a Christmas Cactus in the kitchen window that she had grown for years. Recently I found out that we actually have three cacti named after holidays which I thought was interesting. We have the Thanksgiving Cactus that blooms around the November holiday. It has leaves with sharp, claw-like projections. Then we have another, the Christmas Cactus that blooms from early to mid-wintertime. It has leaves that are rounded, with scalloped edges. And finally, the Easter Cactus that blooms in Spring. It has rounded leaves with smooth edges. The buds form as winter nights shortens.

Back in Latvia one Christmas my hubby gave me a cactus plant. When he passed away ti was August but to send me a message, that plant bloomed with lovely pink flowers, and I understood why.

Interesting. I've always wanted a cactus.

The one I have is the Thanksgiving Cactus, but it is slow this year. I had just a little two or three inch start, and was thrilled it bloomed from just after Thanksgiving off and on through spring. It is a rosy dark pink.

I have a thanksgiving one though we've always called it a Christmas cactus, because it blooms closer to Christmas than our thanksgiving (early October). It was my mother's, so it's really quite old. It looked as if it was ready to give up the ghost but it shot up a new "branch" I guess you'd call it this October. It's in pale pink bloom right now.

We have a Christmas tree here which is native to Australia and a parasite that takes over another tree. They bloom around Christmastime.
