So this morning was about the third time in approx 5 weeks I awoke with the noise of a dog emitting a big bark. No dogs around..but it seems very realistic. I wondered if this ever happened to anyone else, and apparently it does, They are hypnopompic hallucinations..usually visual, but also auditory happen sometime between being asleep and just awakening. They differ from a dream because it is usually just one image or sound. It is a bit scary though. Anybody ever experience them?

I remember hearing noises, I was not dreaming, but not fully awake. Once I got up there was nothing causing those noises.

Yep, that is what it was then. The article said it was more common for them to be visual. The same thing can happen if you are getting ready to go to sleep, and something like that happens. They call those hypongogic hallucinations.

@LadyDuck It is startling to have something like that happen. What happens to me, when I am going to sleep is sometimes my leg jerks and it wakes me up before I ever get to sleep. .

@snowy22315 - Two days ago, soon after I turned off the night lamp and was going to sleep I heard noises, like a kid who cried.

I've had it happen a couple of times. I got jolted awake by a noise only to find nothing happened, but I was now wide awake. It doesn't happen often, which makes me happy. It has never scared me though.

It's a little threatening to me, because I wouldn't want big dark barking in the house, especially an univited one.

@snowy22315 I agree with you. We have a lot of dogs in the building, so hearing one wouldn't alarm me.

Nothing like that but at one time I awoke singing a familiar song. Then I sat up and thought why do I have this song on my mind and saw the fading view of a small band with my high scool boyfriend who has passed away with it, He had played this song i liked, was there visually in fornt of me, and before it all faded away he siad Goodbye to me,

No, I can't say that I have experienced noised upon awakening--not yet, anyway. My big thing the last year or so is to wake up thinking something has happened to my son. His balance isn't good and he falls sometimes. I think I worry it's him falling, but so far he hasn't fallen in the night--just in the daytime.

I've had this happen but didn't know what to make of them. I'm glad you've spoken about them. Now I know it's sort of normal.
