The Post Office (did something they never did before)!

Today, for the first time in my life, I received a piece of mail with literal No Stamp on it! I'm serious.
A long time friend from my school days sent me a Christmas Card like she does practically every year. This year, she obviously forgot to put a stamp on it.
It did have a post mark of December 9th and that little scan mark at the bottom of the envelope, but no stamp.
Usually, if someone forgets to put a stamp on a letter, it gets returned to sender with a message to put a stamp on it. That happened to me once many years ago.
So, obviously this stampless letter got overlooked.
Has this ever happened to you?

Yes, it’s happened. Back in the old days of people actually handling the mail, my limited duty job was to check mail for stamps. I kept track and realized that I’d “saved” the post office nearly $100 in a month by catching mail without stamps, or with inadequate postage, or people trying to pass off Easter Seals stamps as postage stamps.

@AngelNelson — way back in the old days they sold these stamps, or “seals” to raise money for a disabled children’s organization called Easterseals.
Here’s information from their website:

@LeaPea2417 Long story I’ve told here before, but they apologized for their employee(s), but did NOT reimburse me the over $100 they owed me.

I have done that where I steam the stamp and use it again.

We don't really get mail anymore (except for bills) so...
What are stamps for again? I've forgotten.
Is it pretty much just a proof that certain fees have been paid?
In which case, if the mail got to you, it may be possible there originally was a stamp, but perhaps it wasn't glued on properly and fell off somehow.

It had no smudge like a stamp had been there. I really think she forgot to put a stamp on it.

I forgot to put a stamp on a bill I mailed out years ago, and the next day I had a hand-written note from the mailman letting me know that he went ahead and put a stamp on it himself so that my bill wouldn't be late. That was really nice of him.
Do you remember in the past people would write cards or give small gifts to service workers like mailmen? I don't think many people do that anymore. I remember my parents would always put a small gift in the mailbox each year around Christmastime for our mailman, to thank him for faithfully delivering our mail every day without fail.

I remember hearing about that. I'm not sure if my parents ever gave the mailman a Christmas gift.

@LeaPea2417 My parents did. But it was something I never picked up from them. I think one year right after I had gotten married that my wife and I gave our mailman a Christmas card, but I think we only ever did it that one time.

@LeaPea2417 And a bit wealthier. Postage is a small fortune now.

I think no, but the last time I send a letter through postal mail was after college 2002? lol! That was so long ago.

No but that is a lucky deal for the mailer. I did recently get a mangled letter in a bag from the USPS which was interesting.

no. But I know some people have stamp machines. I always try to remember to put stamp on any mail.
