Gifts for my father - part four

I’ve talked about my father’s sheep studs before. As well as breeding Merinos, he had Suffolks and Poll Dorsets. He exhibited all these breeds in agricultural shows. The Merinos in a particular class would be pulled out into a line and held by the wool either side of the face. However the ‘British breeds’, as they were known, were hard to hold in this way and usually wore rope halters. So for one Christmas, I got the local boot-maker to make some white leather halters for the sheep. I thought they’d be more ‘classy’ than the rope ones. I took in a rope one for sizing and got the leather ones home in time for Christmas. I have one more of these ‘gifts for my father’ discussions but the last one wasn’t a real success. The photo is of Monty, a Suffolk, whose mother rejected him and he ended up a pet. How could a mother reject such a lovely animal?

I read somewhere, animals abandon their offspring once they are touched by humans, mothers could smell them & then ostracize them

They could easily happen in the wild but wouldn't be quite so common in domestic aniimals.

He looks very 'stately' there, as know he knows his pedigree has more 'blue blood' than mine does.

Poor Monty, there is always a reason why an animal rejects her own child, it's hard to understand, but it's not cruelty. It's different with humans.

@JudyEv - It's sad, but I know that when an animal realizes that she cannot grow all her "kids", she reject the one who has less chances to survive.

He didn't appear to have a weakness or illness but I can't remember now. Maybe she had twins or triplets and couldn't cope with them all.

I've never understood how mother's could reject their children, either. Human or animal. I bet the white leather halters looked really good.

I can't remember the details. He might have been one of twins and too weak to keep up with his mother.
