I like to see the pretty poinsettia plant around for the holidays. I wasn't aware of a lot of interesting facts about the plant. I will share some of those below: * The plant originates in Mexico. It was used by the ancient Aztecs for red dye, and to ward off fever. Although believed to be poisonous it is not but can cause irritation to eyes and digestion. * The plant is grown in over 100 varieties and comes in shades including white, cream, pink, purple, orange and yellow as well as marble and bicolor varieties. * The modified leaves are often mistaken as a flower. The leaves are called brants and they often have yellow flowers growing in the center of them. * In 2002 the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure recognizing December 12 as Poinsettia Day, It is actually the date of the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett who was senator who is responsible for bringing the plant to the United States from Mexico. * More like a small tree than a plant it can grow between 10 to 15 feet tall in its native tropical environment of Mexico. * It is grown commercially in all 50 states including Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. I love poinsettias but I won't have one in the house. The plant is poisonous to cats.

We can buy them easily here around Christmas time. I still have one surviving since last Christmas.

I have a pair of adorable little poinsettia earrings. I got them for free, but I don’t know where they are. Someone “helpful” tried to rearrange. My church always has a bunch of poinsettias decorating the inside of the church. It’s always so pretty.

We don't have that plant in my wife's mini garden. Besides it's not common here in our place.
